atfnet Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Hello Everyone, Are there any ISP`s that have pledged not to introduce traffic shaping / traffic filtering. I am currently with Tiscali which has P2P traffic shaping and is generaly slow. I don`t mind paying extra and would like true unlimited downloads. It has to be ADSL, a static ip would be nice too. What ISP`s are you using ? How do you find them ? do they use traffic shapping ? Thanks Andy
kmount Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 If you want TRUE unlimited you're looking to pay for it. 2mbit unlimited - £65 +VAT from some Entanet Resellers. I don't know anyone these days who really uses the unlimited word, most are limited by some Fair usage policy or somewhat.
DMcCoy Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Demon seem to do a unlimited business one at £40/pm ex vat for 8mb
atfnet Posted February 4, 2008 Author Posted February 4, 2008 Thanks StewartKnight, ADSL24 look really good. Do you use them ?
kmount Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 ADSL24 are an Enta reseller and the package I highlighted from their site They are a pretty good outfit, fairly small, but with small you get good customer service and back up from Enta if needed. They do suffer slowdowns (worth looking on http://noc.enta.net at night to see the capacity) but its mostly in the evening when other ISPs struggle too.
gaz350 Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 (edited) i would tell you who my connection is with but if your using P2P you can forget that idea (dont want you messing my ping up!!!) but i do pay £35 for a 2meg ADSL line, its worth every penny! Edited February 4, 2008 by gaz350
mac_shinobi Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 bulldog - http://www.bulldogbroadband.com/residential/products/broadband/index.asp bethere - http://www.bethere.co.uk Not sure if the above 2 are fair use policys or what but I know they do static I.P's as Im sure other ISP's will most likely do. Although must admit the router that bethere flog you for 24 quid is a rubbish thomson one.
kmount Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Bethere is a good contender and I'd disagree with the comment about the thompson being bad, I think it works better on a be* connection than any other.
atfnet Posted February 4, 2008 Author Posted February 4, 2008 do bulldog or bethere use traffic shaping/ traffic filtering or port blocking ?
mac_shinobi Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Bethere is a good contender and I'd disagree with the comment about the thompson being bad, I think it works better on a be* connection than any other. im still considering getting an adsl2+ netgear router.
kmount Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I can't comment on any 'other' adsl2 service, but in testing, the bebox as they call it (Rebadged Thompson Speedtouch) seemed to sync higher than the others we tried. The main gripe I have with speedtouch's are the odd firmware hassles one gets and the shocking wireless performance. (I use a speedtouch 585v6 on my 8mbit line).
mac_shinobi Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 the wireless is pants compared to my linksys or netgears I have tried. Not so keen on the thompson speed touchs ability to keep an up to date list of what devices are attached and not attached on specific ports. I've swapped 2 computers around ie originally they were on port 1 and 2 and swapped computer 1 from port 1 to port 2 and computer 2 from port 2 to port 1 and it still thought that computer 1 was on port 1 and computer 2 was on port 2 when in fact it was the other way around. So I dont bother logging into the router to find out I.P Address info, just easier to do an ipconfig or ipconfig /all or something to that extent. do they have a support section with an updated firmware list, might be that I just need to update the firmware or someit.
kmount Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Yes, I'd agree with that, but I do like how they assign firewall rules by MAC address rather than IP. As for the firmware, I think its a bit hit or miss on whether you find it or not, but speedtouch.co.uk is probably a good start! They do need to sort their nasty GUI out as well, I find it ever so annoying having to 'Details', and 'Configure' sections as opposed to clicking and just doing! Still, it holds my sync at 8128 on adslmax better than the dlink did at 6.5mbit.

Sylv3r Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I use be here also. They don't do traffic shaping and I think it costs an extra £5 for a static IP.
Oops_my_bad Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I'll think you'd be hard pressed to find any ISP who truly doesn't shape Talk about wanting the moon on a stick for £19.99 a month
ICT_GUY Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Tiscali is one of the worst. Tecnical support will lie to you non stop about why you are paying for an 8meg service that tops out at 512kb in the evenings when you are 800m away from the exchange, your attenuation and snr are well within top limits for adsl max, your router is connected at 7612kbs and that you can download at 7000kbs in the morning. (http traffic, not p2p) I have been called all sorts of things because I know what I am talking about. I have been told that my line does not support more than 2000kbs (which was funny when I tested the line when he was on the phone after 10pm and got 4000bps). I am planning on taking them to court some time soon, to cancel the contract and claim back all of the money paid to them. Then to go back to BT. I have also made two complaints to ofcom. /rant
kmount Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Good luck, but sadly as your line has at no point dropped below the minimal accepted speeds you may struggle. ADSL being a contended service etc yadda yadda... Tiscali bought my isp out and its been nothing but pants since.
lasercat Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Who is your ISP kmount? I'm with Freedom2Surf, now ultimately owned by Tiscali. I haven't noticed any serious loss of quality, but then again I hardly ever use it heavily these days, don't use P2P so much. I would like the luxury though, if I ever need to, would you suggest I jump ship?
pete Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Tiscali bought out my ISP (Pipex) back in September, and last Sunday night / Monday my connection was switched from Pipex hardware to Tiscali. My connection was throttled and port-filtered from 19:30 to 22:00 every night - port jenga revealled that the Eve cluster was up and taking logons. In 4 years with Pipex, I never had connection issues and I phoned them once to change some payment details. In 3 days, Tiscali annoyed me sufficiently to phone them up (30 mins and 45 mins on the phone at 10p/minute) and request my MAC code so I could replace them. It would seem that quite a lot of Pipex customers are doing the same.

I have proof going back since I signed up, showing that they throttle the speed in the evenings. Also they can get away with a slower speed if the line is not capable of higher speeds, but if they fail to provide the service they are paid for to save money, then they are in breah of contract. They will not contest in small claims court. Edited February 5, 2008 by ICT_GUY
OutToLunch Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I'm with Metronet and can't say I have any complaints even though they do use traffic shaping - they're totally transparent about what traffic is shaped, when and why. The logic is good and it means I do get great browsing speeds over the normally busy evening periods - then if you're that way inclined you can thrash P2P from midnight till 4PM. The only drastic slowdown I've noticed even with shaping in place is usenet traffic in the evenings being painfully slow. http://portal.metronet.co.uk/support/broadband/network/traffic_management.shtml Sadly, they don't offer the same package I'm on anymore (8mbit/100GB monthly usage cap for £22) or I'd recommend them without hesitation...
