caffrey Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Pardon my ignorance as this is a relatively new area to me, but what systems do I need to look at for contactless ? e.g. We're about to have Paxton net 2 installed on the doors, and we want to future proof so the cards we choose are compatible with future deployments, so what readers and card types do we need ? I hear things like mifare etc. We would be looking eventually to move to Cashless Catering, Papercut MF , Parentpay or similar and anything else that the card can be used for Thank you
RLR Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 We currently use HID cards which I believe are quite old. Our HID are currently working with Access Control, Papercut and a Cashless catering system and Wisepay. Our cashless is with a company called Cunninghams which we will defiantly move away from when we get the chance to. I've heard mifare is the way to go if you're looking into a new system.
FN-GM Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 By default Paxton will give you the Paxton proprietary readers. If you want universal its best to go for the Mifare readers. Also the Mifare cards are cheaper!
psydii Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Definately make sure that paxton supply mifare readers.
localzuk Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Indeed. If you want proper future proofing, go Mifare. Paxton Net2 cards are Hitag 2 based, and are pretty much the only system on the market that use that technology (well, other than car doors!!). The cards are 1/4 the price also.
robk Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 The Paxton Net2 universal readers do Mifare as well as others, so you want those rather than the standard HID ones, I think just requesting Mifare support will future proof you on this.
caffrey Posted April 29, 2016 Author Posted April 29, 2016 Perfect, thanks everyone - seems I was thinking the right way after all! I see the cards are very cheap which is a bonus although the printers are a bit more expensive. What is used to program the cards ? Just a standard reader and a bit of software?
Edu-IT Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 What do you mean by program? Do you mean to read the card numbers? You can pick up MiFare card readers pretty cheaply. You could then put these numbers into the individuals AD accounts and get Paxton reading them from there.
plexer Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Most card systems are just using the uuid of the card to look up the user and their access rights as will other systems i.e printers and catering systems. Some systems such as Salto also store user door access on the cards as well so the card tells the door it can open for it rather than a look up. Ben
Asgard Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 We use MiFare Classic (NXP) 1K cards which are used for PCounter (Konica Minolta MFDs) Paxton Net2 Mifare Cashless Catering Finance System (Student Bursary's/Financial Assistance)
MatthewL Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 When using card readers with PaperCut a card readers that reads your cards/fobs is matched and fitted to the copiers (certainly Sharp machines give you many options). You will find that Paxton fobs have about 4 profiles that can be matched up. The number Paxton reads to what PaperCut does will be different but a user within PaperCut just assigns it to their AD login.
dhicks Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I hear things like mifare etc. If you're in London, the Oyster card is a Mifare card, so people can register and use those as their photocopier / door access / etc card - it makes them less likely to misplace their card. Even more so if they use their contactless bank card (which seem to be readable by most Mifare card readers, best to double-check the model in question before you buy, though) or phone - one less card for people to carry around, and makes them even less likely to misplace or lend their card to someone else.
caffrey Posted May 3, 2016 Author Posted May 3, 2016 Starting to click, For the cards, the numbers will be read and imported into Active directory using an AD attribute (eg department or pager) For door control we will be fitting Paxton NET2 , we already have some of these on site and the number pads / readers will need to be changed to ones that support Proximity cards. The NET2 software I think can sync with AD possibly with 3rd party software (Net2ADSyncServer) not sure if current NET2 software supports this natively This then gives us a foundation to add further services that can access the Proximity card code from AD (Cashless / Parentpay ? Papercut MF and other uses) , this also gives further protection by just having a central storage point for the card number in case of lost / stolen cards I assume everything will work in relative harmony, but then again it's IT
ITGURU Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 We have Paxton Net2+ System here. Whilst we used it for door access, we didn't have the car readers fitted to our MFPs purely for the fact that only staff use door cards, not students. However, we were advised that we could have card readers fitted that would read the cards. The only issue I have had before with buying the physical cards is that we once bought some NOT from Paxton. Whilst advertised as genuine Paxton cards we ended up with some card numbers being duplicated or cards not working. Having given them the number on the front of the pack they turned out to be different types of cards, not compatible with the net2, so just ensure you are buying genuine cards and you should be ok.
nadeem Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 We use our mifare based cards for: Access Control Cashless Catering Follow You Printing/Photcopying Attendance Monitoring Library Cards (and then also print on them to make them photo ID cards)
Big_Ted Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 paxton cards/fobs are normally HiTag2. If you need a reader for a copier for use with PaperCut MF then look for a HiTag2 reader. The number you read will probably not match that stored in the Paxton software but it really does not matter.
caffrey Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 These Paxton readers seem to fit the bill ? Access Control UK - Specifications - Net2 proximity MIFARE® reader - P50

caffrey Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 Good call, we use GAFE and pager is synced with Work mobile phone numbers in GADS, simple enough to exclude that though on sync
Big_Ted Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I would look at the Rfideas range if you wanted to read Paxton as well.
