sted Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 Sure but I didn't really mean playing old games on modern screens. I agree with you there. I meant comparing the same generation consoles and games. So if console X had 4k output but boring games and console Y had a 720 screen but great games, I would choose console Y. It seems to me that when I read about console there is so much emphasis on the hardware whereas I am more interested in the playability of the games. For me, the Nintendo consoles have always had the best games so have always stuck with them. thats the thing look at the current 3 consoles in terms of games bought / use personally my xbox one is the most used (so much so i filled the 1tb drive and it now has a 750gb ssd as well atached), wi-u i cant remember the last time i had a game i dumped 80 hours+ into in a very long time and even at the end it was still fun (granted a lot of my wii-u games are virtual console stuff but i still have far more wii-u games than ps4 games and again i needed an external drive (but that was basically because one game ive got would fill up the internal storage on its own pretty much)) and my ps4 which tbh i only have because i swapped it for my old 512gb xbox one and has basically been used as a blueray player (sony tv and amp so one remote) so far ive got 2 games on it one in the last week. So again at least to me its not about the power (or id be playing games in 4k on my laptop) its about the games. You cant really argue with Nintendo's first party stuff just look at any top 10 games of console generation x and tehres a good chance 1/3 or more will be nintendo even if they were outsold by everyone else
simpsonj Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 If this is the amalgamation of Nintendo's home and mobile consoles, then one word will guarantee this console is a success: Pokemon. If the plan is to shift the Pokemon franchise (and Monster Hunter for that matter) from the 3DS to the Switch, the sales alone from those two games, along with the big hitters such as Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, should near guarantee a success. I don't think Nintendo is after the Activision/EA/Ubisoft gamer market, or even the mass multiplayer market. Its always seemed that Nintendo prefer local multiplayer over internet multiplayer, and the Switch is the culmination of that idea, a console that you can take with you, that has two controllers 'built in' and can easily link to other consoles. What would really help would be if another games developer took the Switch as seriously as Nintendo will. I'm thinking like Rare did with the N64, and create some fantastic games that rival the 1st party ones in popularity. My fingers are crossed for Atlus, but that's probably just wishful thinking
flyinghaggis Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 (edited) well thats a switch pre ordered lol As you say GAME are taking pre-orders..... Buy Nintendo Switch | Free UK Delivery | GAMEtrue But why on earth would you want to buy something when you don't know what it's going to cost or whether you're even getting a decent price compared to other retailers And just look at the wording on GAME's site if that isn't enough to send alarm bells ringing PLEASE NOTE: Until we receive an official price from Nintendo, a temporary price of £999.99 will be given to the Nintendo Switch console. This placeholder will show through the checkout process and on your confirmation email, but you will not be charged this amount. At a later date, the confirmed price will be guaranteed to those who have pre-ordered. At this time we have not received official confirmation of stock allocation, nor of the availability of stand-alone consoles versus console bundles. Until we have our allocation confirmed by Nintendo we cannot guarantee that every order will be fulfilled for launch, nor whether we will be able to offer you a stand-alone console or bundle. We will contact you in the event that you need to choose whether you wish to receive a bundled console. Basically they have no idea what's it's going to cost and no idea whether they'll even get stock in at launch. Plus how can you "guarantee" that those who've pre-ordered will be charged the 'confirmed' price. That's basically GAME saying they can set any price at a later date then 'guarantee' to chage you it! Presumably that'll be RRP but they should really have waited until pricing was announced before offering to take pre-orders IMO. Plus what's with the whole £999 figure showing up on the confirmation email and the checkout process. I'd seriously question the business practices of a company behaving like this and strongly consider whether it's one you want to be giving your business to..... Run a mile IMO....... sted Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 worst case i cancel it and get my money back. But from what ive seen i want one and i doubt much will change that. Theres also the fact nintendo tend to under supply consoles at launch so i could probably pick it up then resell it for more than i paid for it anyway so im not worried

In fact once prices are announced if a retailer is willing to guarantee to honour the price it might actually be a shrewd move given the instability of the pound at the moment. I still think the pre order terms that GAME is offering are shocking though. Edited November 4, 2016 by flyinghaggis
mikeyd101 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 I watched some interesting videos yesterday about speculation, there were a couple of really good points brought up. Add on controllers, nintendo had always had wacky controllers and the fact you can slide connect the controller might mean that you can get custom controllers for custom games i.e a trackball or jog dial, retro gamecube controllers etc. The second thing was VR ala samsung gear vr, slide joycons out and the switch into a headset and off you go, the biggest problem i see with that is the relative low res on the switch screen (rumoured to be 720p). But the whole bolt on plastic bit is right up nintendos alley. I hate the whole pre-order thing, it makes vendors lazy, look at what has happened to the game market with preordering, games released are getting shorter and relying on there prequals to build the brand for them, selling addons of stuff that should have made it into the game in the first place. It looks like hardware is following with the xbox / ps4 revisions. I'm going to try and hold out till the thing is out and there is some solid reviews / hands on look myself, but the temptation is far to great especially with a new Zelda and Mario game time at stake.

If I still owned a small screen I might pick console Y but based on modern screens I wouldn’t choose console Y as at 720p those games would look rubbish ruining the gameplay and atmosphere. After upgrading my screen size I removed all 720p devices and apps this year that I own due to how poor they work on large screen sizes this includes no longer using DVD's. 720p is that outdated its not even last generation, but multiple generations out of date. It’s nowhere near good enough for a new device. Resolution impacts the playability of games and I think Nintendo have made a big mistake with this. EDIT: The way I see it hardware impacts graphics which impact gameplay, UI and atmosphere which helps make games more fun. Edited November 4, 2016 by Pottsey
simpsonj Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 Isn't it just the small screen that's at 720p, and when attached to a TV using the base station, it produces 1080p at minimum? Would be very surprised if the Switch had a worse resolution than the WiiU...
pscott Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 The GPU can output 4k with ease, it depends what Ninendo choose to do with it!
Pottsey Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 The GPU can output 4k with ease, it depends what Ninendo choose to do with it! Depends what we are talking about, its not powerful enough for 4k 3D graphics. But it should be able to output 4k video. Would be very surprised if the Switch had a worse resolution than the WiiU... If it produces 1080p minimum then that's not as bad. I wonder if the games will be built around the small screen or main screen? 720p scaled up to 1080p isn't very pleasant to use. Hopefully it re renders the game at native 1080p.
Arthur Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Nintendo Switch price revealed ahead of March 2017 launch PLASTIC EMPORIUM Toys R Us may have just revealed the price of Nintendo's upcoming Switch console. Either that, or it's having a giraffe. The site has slapped the Nintendo Switch with a price of CA$329.99 which, if legit, means it's likely to cost around £200 in the UK and $249 in the US. ^ £200 seems far too cheap.
sted Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Nintendo Switch price revealed ahead of March 2017 launch ^ £200 seems far too cheap. Personally id guess that someone at tru was creating a place holder page with placeholder data and just typed what seemed a reasonable price to them rather than $999.99 or whatever. also id suspect that whatever it is in usd it will be in gbp so if its $300 it will be £300 stuff usually is
flyinghaggis Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) Given Nintendo are unlikely to subsidise it and a similar tegra powered tablet is about £200 I'd guess it'll be around the £300 mark by the time you add a bundled game and a dock plus controller. Maybe £250 for a bundle without a game. Edited November 14, 2016 by flyinghaggis
Dos_Box Posted November 14, 2016 Author Posted November 14, 2016 Price, obviously, is going to be a HUGE deciding factor in the launch of the Switch. To my mind they can do one or more of several options: Have a pre-buy at a stupidly low price, say from CES Have a very low price point launch for a very limited period on it's initial release Release several versions (games/docks etc.) at varying price points Given the problems with the Wii U I suspect that they may try and get as many gamers on board as soon as they can. This will help not only in initial game sales but to have early adopters showing off the kit to their friends on a large scale promoting more sales of the console (is it a console or 'device?) is good enough. Any introductory offers can be nerfed quite soon after launch in a 'tough, you should have got here earlier' kind of way. No doubt we shall see soon enough, but for a launch price I can well see £200 being a reasonable amount, even of it may be a short term price.
Matt_Renato Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 The big problem Nintendo have had in the previous couple of generations is the incredibly low attach rate of game sales. The Wii may have sold a bucket load but people bought very few games for it, I'd imagine the situation is even worse for the Wii U. Subsidising the hardware only makes business sense if you know you can generate profits on the game sales, I doubt Nintendo will want to risk selling the hardware at a loss.

Games - hardware sales on the wii were low as id suspect a very high percentage became nothing but wii sports boxes i dont think thats the case on wii-u granted im using a sample size of 1 (me) but i have probably a dozen or so games on my wii-u not including virtual console games and by comparison 2 for my ps4 infact i think i have more wii-u games than ps3/4 combined.
simpsonj Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Rumours abound that the Switch will sell for £200 at launch, or £250 with a games bundle...
Dos_Box Posted November 15, 2016 Author Posted November 15, 2016 I know they have said they will not sell at a loss, but they simply cannot risk selling it for more than the cheapest XBox One S and PS4 bundles. They have made great efforts to get games companies on board to write Switch games, but given the issues of past third party developer support they may have had to convince them thet they can shift a decent amount of consoles at launch time. The only way they can really do this is to discount them for a brief period. At least that's what I'll hope they do! They simply can't afford (in reputation terms) another Wii U debacle.
flyinghaggis Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) The price of games is also something I'm worried about as I fear the cost of cartridges will add to the retail price potentially making then more costly than other optical disc based platforms. As much as I'd like them to I really don't see Nintendo trying to compete with the ps4/xb1 in terms of price but we can all live in hope:D In terms of the 'attach rate' the switch should mean that Nintendo will be able to combine the handheld/home market finally which means they no longer have to worry about creating games for two systems. This means all the handheld franchises like Pokemon should now start appearing on the switch which will help ensure a constant stream of games rather than the drought owners faced with the wii u. I'm also hoping we see some kind of subscription service for the Nintendo Switch as they have such a great back catalogue of games that offering access to them via something similar to ps plus or xbox gold seems like a no-brainer. The main thing about the hardware which concerns me at the moment isn't the 720p/1080p issue. It's that the switch is rumoured to only have 4gb of ram which could cause issues porting ps4/xb1 games across to the system they're both packing 8gb. And 3rd party support is what pretty much killed the Wii u so any barrier to porting flagship games is a worry. IMO the whole 720p/1080p issue with the xb1 / ps4 was totally blown out of proportion. flyinghaggis Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Rumours abound that Zelda won't be out for the march launch but apparently the Mario game will be available along with splatoon and skyrim. Nintendo Switch will get Mario game from day one, Skyrim and Splatoon too - Pocket-lint
Pottsey Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 IMO the whole 720p/1080p issue with the xb1 / ps4 was totally blown out of proportion. I don’t think it is blown out of proportion although I admit how bad it is does come down to personal opinion and what size screen you use. The average house screen is 1080p or higher and running at a none native resolution like 720p tends to cause a noticeable drop in imagine quality. Plus on very large screens 720p becomes blocky, hard to read and play. It’s already a problem and as screens get larger with resolutions higher over the next few years the problem is only going to get worse. Running 720p on a modern 60" to 100" 4k, HDR screen is kind of counter productive and looks terrible.
