Wow, a 2017 launch puts a bit of a clamp on things.

Not to mention this (if it's true)...

 

The Nintendo NX might ditch disc drives for cartridges

 

Macronix are Nintendo’s long time go-to partners for the mask-rom memory – the guys behind the 3DS’s cartridges. Typically this would be put down to the Nintendo 3DS cartridges – but the reality is that Macronix recently began testing on it’s newer line of 32nm ROM chips – the Nintendo 3DS uses 75nm (With a max of 8GB storage) so these new cards won’t be used for that purpose. Unless the company is savvy to a big 3DS game we’re not aware of, or they’re developing for Nintendo’s next-gen handheld, we’d make a strong bet that it’s all linked to the NX.

not sure if this is bad. if a 32gb card is about as cheap as a blueray like some reports say isnt it good as games can have fee space for patches wont need installing to hdd like ps4\xbone before use and run faster than from a disc. we might actually have a console you can plug in and play unlike current where put disc in wait for install wait for patch to download and install play so basically the worst bits of a pc without the gains

Are Nintendo going to use the switch to cartridges as an excuse to bump up the price of their games to £40-£60 though (even if the cost to them is comparable to Blu-ray)?

Definitely good things to have.

 

With current Wii U games roughly 5GB-20GB in size, I suppose a 32GB card would be fine for the moment at least.

 

PC games like GTA: V already take up 60GB, but I guess we won't be seeing these types of games on the NX so it doesn't matter.

They could always just split a game across cartridges for games larger than 32GB.

its even possible if they design it right a cart could take 2 or more chips so default is 1 32gb but 2\3\4 32gbs per cart is possible

yeah to me this sounds dreadful. If i want to play games outside i have a phone. I have a 3ds and i think the last times its been used when i wasnt at home were on the coach down to bet and when my car was serviced/had new tyres. I like the idea behind the wii u and its as portable as i need i can play ye olde games on a screen where they dont look god awful (try playing vc gba games on a 42" screen lol). If its shield esque its too big to be really portable anyway even 3dsxl pushes that limit to breaking point imo. What i want is a box that isnt stupidly underpowered compared to the xbox/ps4(or debatably neo/scorpio). I fear that zelda breath of the wild may actually be better on the wii-u as its a console not a compromise box

Not being backwards compatible won't do them any favours either if those rumours are true.

Admittedly, if they are switching to a whole new hardware platform that would be an issue but IIRC with the Wii compatability in the Wii U they simply shoe-horned in the Wii hardware in there (I hacked mine too!).

What people want from a console these days is a lot different from what people wanted (and expected) 10 years ago.

Both Microsoft and Sony have powerful console which do a lot more than just play games with home media features and on-demand services all rolled into them.

The Wii U has completly missed out on many of these (admittedly they do have a few apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime).

If Nintendo has had the bright idea of simply going for the mobile gaming market I think they are going to have a very tough time. Gamers want consoles to be, well, consoles. Powerful gaming devices in the home where you can game full screen on powerful devices with all the bells and whistles.

There are plenty of mobile gaming platforms already out there which, tbh, are a lot less expensive than what Nintendo would be offering.

If they try and go for the 'collaborative' gaming route they may have forgotten about the existance of 'the internet'.

I really hope the rumours are untrue (and possibly misdirection from Nintendo) because if not then I don't think anyone will be taking the plunge.

The sad part is Nintendo had the potential to operate a very powerful online gaming service backed by strong first-party support, strong second-party support and enough reputation to hold third-party interest and host their products and compete with big players in the market as they have done for decades. You can see from the current generation of consoles how much impact they had on the market with the Wii and to some degree the Wii U. Otherwise movement control never would have taken off and the use of tablets as auxiliary screens and control systems wouldn't have suddenly sprung up.

 

But Nintendo want to be different and stubborn, anything they put on the market is decent but just isn't competitive and falls very short of the main gaming market. Their consoles and games are now relegated to side-shows at best with a slow and subpar online system and nothing to make you and your friends grip their products and go "I need this." You might be clinging on to a copy of Splatoon whilst everyone else is playing the newest COD, Battlefield or FIFA on a rival console (to use the three biggest IPs as example).

i dont see any way tegra chips can compete with proper x86 cpus and associated desktop gpus for sheer grunt at best performance wise its going to be a very fast stb/tablet like the nvidia shield

Yup, and after the Wii U debacle, gamers will be extra critical of it before handing over their cash.

I suspect with the Wii U at the beginning there was an attitude of 'Sure, it's not as powerful of Sony and Microsoft's machines, but as it's Nintendo there will be TONS of titles coming out for it. I'll give it a try'.

so its real name is the switch looks like launch games will be some 3d mario game zelda botw some nba game and something more "realistic" looking than zelda where you shoot dragons (monster hunter?) and wither it plays wiiu games or splatoon/mario kart are getting ported (couldnt tell if they were vc esque or new from the footage) Looks like an ipad with removable controllers and docks into a u shaped device you plug into tv. You can use what looks like a wii u pro controller or detact the side controllers and use as small controllers or with a joining bit as a more normal controller (think wiiu pad with no screen and smaller). It also looks like removing it from teh dock allows you to litterally just continue where you were so you can play zelda on tv then carry tablet and play it in bed etc

Looks perfect for my gaming habits, but I'm not sure if it'll catch on or not... Still, pretty innovative again from Nintendo. Just not sure if Skyrim (a 5 year old game, albeit with a reasonable recent remaster) would be up there as a killer app.

Well, that seems to announce that Nintendo have given up the race in the 'big' console market.

It's a good idea on Nintendo's part as they can now abandon the whole home and mobile dual market (WiiU and 3DS) and just have one platform which does it all to work on.

My only reservations are power (will it be more powerful/versatile than existing mobiles?) and battery life.

Given the awful WiiU controller battery I hope they have ensured that whatever they put in there will provide plenty of life for mobile gaming.

There is also the question of hardware. Will it be cart based? How much storage will it have (if any) and will it provide for home multi-media connectivity (NAS, Netflix etc.).

Whilst it may have lots of Nintendo games, will consumers take a risk with it?

Once pricing is announced I think we'll find out. I suspect this will be at at CES in January.

If they don't get the pricing right I suspect Nintendo will get into difficulty. They really need to undercut Sony and Microsoft to do this.

Yes. There's a proprietary game card slot on the top.

Nintendo (and NVidia) emphasize the Switch is a home gaming system a lot, so I bet it won't have multimedia capabilities like the XBox One or they will be extremely limited.
