Just looking for your opinions,

 

Our Pc's and server is coming up to 5 years old now and theres a few complaints of them been slow. (but once they are logged in and running they are ok)

Just wanting to know what you would say is reasonable times for this and if theres anything I can do to improve issues.

1. Power on - to log in screen

2. Log in screen - desktop shown

Our Curriculum Servers are currently 8 years old along with most of our client machines, our times are as follows:

 

1. Power on - to log in screen = 1 minute 27secs

2. Log in screen - desktop shown = 8 - 12 secs dependant on workstation type.

 

Have a look at your GPO settings to see how many you have applying, also if any one of them is holding up the login times due to issues applying, another thing you could look at is your antivirus, is this checking every file as you log in?

We finally got rid of our oldest PCs last year but they were (at 8 years old)

 

40-52 seconds - power on to logon screen

80-143 seconds - logon to being able to type in word with word set to start automatically for a never logged in before user

25-61 seconds - logon as above but for previously logged in user

Just done a check of staff laptops here and i get the following and i have no explanation

On a five year old Novatech desktop (i3 4Gb)

Boot: 24 seconds from power on

Login - first time: 20 seconds

Login - second time: <1 second - almost instant

 

This is on Win 8.1. We have replaced all the old mechanical hard drive with cheap Kingston 120Gb SSD's - cheap way to make a big difference to older kit. Also configure default user profile (start screen etc) as part or the imaging process + removed all the metro apps that don't get used.

first number is Boot to login, second is actual login time.

(these numbers where taken yesterday)

 

oh forgot to mention, these are 5 year old i3's with mechanical hdds. (stones)

We've seen Core 2 duo go from around 100 seconds to boot up to around 15 seconds by upgrading to SSD (cheap £35 drive), log on times improve but not by as much. log depends much more on the user profile so it's harder to set realistic expectations.

Create a new OU apply all gps to it and remove one policy at a time but make sure you delete your profile afterward you login for it to be fresh.

 

This will eliminate which GP is the heavy hitter which is slowing you down, which then you can look at it.

 

It could be just a simple corrupted shortcut from a redirect startup menu or from the desktop.

You could try using windows performance toolkit to troubleshoot your login times. I've not used it myself but read similar threads like this that suggest using it.

look at profiles for logon times!

 

If your users are on roaming profiles then take a look at the profile sizes. Dont forget that with roaming profiles, every time the user logs on, it downloads the profile from the server. I've seen them before when people are allowed to save to desktop or downloads, for example, that profiles sizes get up to several GB's.

Use GPOs to redirect everything you can from the profile and you'll speed things up.

We've got speed issues here too, aside from me needing to replace a few switches still, I think profiles are our main problem. A lot end up not synchronising and I imagine this is because Windows times it out after so long?

Is it practical/possible to quota profiles? And at what limit do people think is sensible? Taking into account the downloads folder, which most staff use as their home for resources -_-

Long Logon speeds can be due to many things make a long list and start checking them off here are some tostart with

Broadcasts on network

Loops on network

Sever plugged into 100 meg port
