NB9457 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 A school we manage has a bit of a spiders web of a network, all 3 switches are currently 100Mbps, with a few gigabit PoE switches coming of them for the WiFi, so as you could imagine, speeds sometimes get slow. Now to be honest I could as it stands, probably get away with getting rid of the 3x24 port switches and going to just one 48 port with PoE, so if the price and spec is decent I may be swayed. Min requirements are gigabit, with some PoE ports. I've been looking at the UniFi Edge switches, I was thinking of getting one or two of these, just wondering what experience people had?
synaesthesia Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 We have a pair in mostly as we just wanted to test a 10Gbit link. They're lovely although the vlan interface is a little bit of a pain to get your head around and they are BLOODY noisy if POE!

It was the 10Gb stacking that drew me in to be honest, I have UniFi switches at other schools and like how easy it is to team the ports, just never dealt with the edge stuff.
synaesthesia Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 They're ideal if you've got any other unifi stuff around for the passive 24v POE + they do standard POE as well. Dirt cheap too.

Sitting on my desk now Comparing specs to other more established brands, we just had to go for the Ubiquiti Edge. Should be installing them on Monday so I'll let you know how we go. 1

The ES‑48‑750W, with the money we saved from not buying our usual HP switches we bought a second so we could upgrade a fibre link from 1Gb to 10Gb. We also wanted the PoE so we could remove loads of PoE injectors from the cabs
VeryPC_Anthony_L Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Ubiquiti do 3 types of switches - EdgeSwitch: These are layer 3 and come in various models. There is the lite version and the POE version, the differnce is that the lite is non-poe. The 48 port also includes the sfp+ ports which allow 10gb. - UnifiSwitch: The Unifi switch is layer 2. If you ahev unifi switches then this is a good option to look at as the switch can be managed from the same software. The 48 port again has sfp+ ports. These only come with POE. - ToughSwitch: These are layer 2 and are the smallest switches they do.

However 10GB uplinks are pretty good.

So we have both of these installed now and whilst they weren't too bad when being configured on my desk, once they were installed in the cabs and the fans really kicked in, its like being in the middle of a hurricane! Unfortunately one cab is in a room that has just been changed into an intervention room so having lots of complaints. Might have to swap it out for a quieter model Other than that I love these switches
njc235 Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I've only had a quick look at the spec sheets but if the stacking is one of the main attractions, I see no mention of it. The fact that they have SFP+ ports doesn't mean that they stack, at least not like HPs 2920 for example.

pete Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 The UniFi switches are annoying in that you can do (say) A,B,C and D at the switch CLI, but when managed from a controller only A and B are exposed. Oh, and the controller will overwrite the CLI config unless you do some jenga. They're nice devices (have an 8 port in the home lab for PoE) but they desperately need the CLI features to be included in the controller interface.
pirran Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I've been pretty tempted by the edgeswitches, however the lack of warranty has so far kept me away. HP Procurve/ Aruba = lifetime, only 1 year for unproven reliability could make these things very expensive in the long run. Specifications look great, I just need more convincing!
