RISO copier leasing

Hello,

 

Our SBM here is looking at starting a lease for 2 MPFs with RISO, but they only do 5 year contracts. Has anyone here got experience with them?

No, MFP's. Leasing from Riso the company (didn't even know they did this service!)

 

Apparently they feature hold printing as standard. I'll be interested to see how that works.

One of my schools had the things I described and they didn't work out very well.

Yeah we've got one and it hardly gets used.

We got one for things like Drama production programs and governors minutes. They are a massive upgrade to the old hand cranked, one colour jobbies. Colour quality is not poster perfection but for things that will be looked at and dumped they work out to be much more cost effective and the speed is phenomenal. Odd they say only 5 year as I'm sure ours is a 4 and we had the option of 3 or 5 as well.

 

I hope he doesn't mind but maybe drop William Asare ([email protected]) a line. He was my contact at Riso and was brilliant and has now moved to a re-seller. He may not be your area rep but will definitely be able to point you in the right direction.

Well I would say to RISO that if it is only 5 year then no go. & I can confirm our contract is 4 years. So it was definitely possible last year.

Apparently the rep said that 5 years is fine because the new MFPs are so good that they last.

 

Our current issue is that the Konica Minolta MFPs that we have are falling to bits at the age of 4 years because of the millions of pages that they have done!

Well your only saving grace is that as they are under contract it would be up to them to sort them if there is any major issue. It might be worth clarifying with them what would happen if a machine become beyond economic repair with the lifetime.

 

If you are looking to use card readers get the new machines. The old ones that have add on readers are a bit of a faff. Beyond that they do everything our Sharps do, just quicker and generally quicker.

If it's a lease isn't servicing and repairs covered as part of that? Both schools I have worked in have strategically chosen local leasers as it means an engineer is on site the same day, normally within a couple of hours at no extra cost.

Can't vouch for a five year. But I've seen the comcolor reach three years easily. Combined with papercut they are great.

 

You need to be aware that your paper can't be too cheap, otherwise you will have problems. They are basically superfast inkjets that spin the standard inkjet costmodel on its head: very very cheap ink, very expensive machines. If the paper is too thin the ink bleeds through (very very slightly, but *can* made duplex printing unworkable) and also they can be prone to jamming because they run so fast.

 

With a well trained staff they are great: at 90-120ppm makes last minute jobs a breeze!

 

Finally, I'm sure your SBM has spun the numbers to check that it will offer VFM. This can be a deal breaker. For example if we have two devices, and push volume through them we save £££££ every year, but if we put them everywhere people wanted them rather than just in the Repro Room they would not provide any cost savings over traditional copiers.

I'd be a little dubious of it, any good company will do a 3 year lease, all depending on your quantity, I've seen machines that have had it after 3 years, 5 years could be a push.

 

Just so you know Sharp and Toshiba have options within drivers to hold all jobs.

We are almost three years into a 5 year contract with RISO, I see no issue with the 8 machines we have lasting the term plus more. We could have done a 2, 3, 4 or 5 year agreement but obviously 5 made more financial sense. We have 7 ComColor 3010s and 1 7150, quality is fine for 98% of jobs and boy are they fast. Cost wise per page, they are unbeatable and support is on a 4 hour SLA. My mum is a business manager at a school and has had RISO machines for the best part of 15 years and is in fact the reason we got one on trial and then an agreement...

We moved to the RISO machine about 10 years ago - we are on our 3rd Machine - we have so far upgraded before the end of the lease for a better and more economical machine. We have also moved to print stations and taken all printers from individual machines, this is done in conjunction with Papercut. They have all been reliable, fast and cheap, as has been mentioned previously they can bleed on cheap paper but we just buy the better quality for reports etc that go out to parents. Nothing has come on the market yet that would tempt us to move away from RISO. They are reliable and if we have a problem an engineer is out within the day - but to be honest we have not lost any print time in all this time.7

I can't fault ours! We have the finisher unit which makes booklets, punches and staples etc. It has saved so much time for TA's and Teachers. 90-120ppm (not with too.

 

The only thing I would say is make sure they come and check it once a term (clean rollers etc) that's the only time ours jams. But even when it does Jam its so easy to get the paper out.

 

Setting the cards up with Papercut is a bit of a Faff and there isn't a self provisioning option with RISO also if you are using the card reader (MiFare) make sure its on the latest firmware version, ours initially kept dropping out but the support was top notch.

 

Really cant fault it.

I've passed all your comments on. I think she might be finding out about the contract length before going for it!

We are on our second ComColor here now.

 

The first one which was one of the original ComColor machines launched into the UK was replaced a few months short of the 5 year lease expiration. I was getting a bit temperamental and requiring a fair few engineer visits, but it had printed over 3 million copies in its lifetime with us.

 

The new model we have now (ComColor 7150) is a much more capable machine. We have the document finisher attachment as well, so it can staple, punch and fold and staple booklets. It's very fast. We've had a few engineer call outs, but our local engineer is great.

 

Overall, I'd recommend them. Nothing comes close on per copy prices thats for certain, although make sure your contracted page counts are accurate as 'overage' copies are much more expensive.
