Personally I've had a couple of friends who have had bad experiences with supermarket fuel from a certain brand leader and on the strength of that stick to main brands nowadays wherever possible.

On 28 February 2007 motorists in South East England reported that their cars were breaking down. Motorists blamed supermarket petrol with most of the fuel sold by the supermarkets in the South East coming from the Vopak terminal in the Thames Estuary. Harvest Energy, which supplies Asda, shares tank facilities at the depot in West Thurrock with another oil company, Greenergy, which is part-owned by Tesco and supplies both Tesco and Morrisons.

 

Then on the evening of 2 March scientists who had been testing the petrol reported finding traces of silicon in the fuel which were subsequently tracked down to four storage tanks by Harvest Energy.

 

Morrisons immediately announced that it was to stop selling unleaded petrol at 41 outlets supplied by the Vopak terminal while Tesco was emptying and refilling tanks at 150 petrol stations but was not suspending sales. The following day Asda said it was replacing unleaded petrol at the 30 forecourts in the South East as a "precautionary measure".

 

By Sunday, 4 March, tests from Tesco and Asda had found contamination of silicon in unleaded fuel.

Those dates would tie in. My friend had a Beamer and ended up having to get rid of it as a result.

Stick to Shell garages and use VPower, its usually about 109... Supermarket fuel - I've found.. Petrol doesn't seem to do very well it certainly doesn't last as long as Other brands of Fuel IE Esso or Shell.. The Diesel however seems fine.

I use Momentum 99. Never had an issue.

 

It's a shame the government still tax 75% of fuel...

And now that fuel prices are coming down, it's most likely only a matter of time that they increase fuel duty again.

my last petrol car (st170) didn't like that one bit the engine just felt "funny" was ok with shell/bp sainsburys 95/99 just not Tesco stuff. Current car ive never put owt other than vpower petrol in it so far but ive only filled up twice

Always put branded Petrol in most of my cars, mostly shell, jus always found them to run better somehow. Hire cars when I have had them get the cheapest fuel :-).

 

I hope it stays down at BP/Shell till I get my car in March and keeps down.

It doesn't bother me to be honest. I'll go to any garage that's the most convenient. The one I normally go to is Esso and I use their cheapest fuel (no VPower or anything like that) I've never had any problems with any fuel I've bought and I've bought some from the supermarket chains before... Maybe it's down to the placebo effect you're spending more so you believe it's better quality? Though I'm not claiming to be a fuel professor, I could be wrong, but me personally doesn't make a difference!

 

On the price side of things whether it's £1.15 per litre or 97p per litre that's only around £5 different overall to fill up my tank. I'm not to worried about a 5er a month to be honest drop it to 50ppl and then I'll care!

Supermarket fuel will make very little difference if any to performance. It's the long term effect on the engine where it does count, it tends to have less/no additives in which lubricate certain parts like idle control valves etc. which lead to higher maintenance costs.

 

One in four or five fill ups with decent fuel should alleviate this problem.

I used to have fill up once a week. That suddenly turns that £5 into £20-£25 a month. There are also those who live much closer to the breadline than you and have to literally watch every penny.

 

In any case, whether that £5 is a lot of money or not, it's better in my pocket than in the government's/fuel company's.

My last Mondeo (Mk3) hated Tesco diesel - ran like a dog on it.

 

But it also didn't like BP Ultimate which was the Ford recommended fuel for it??!

 

It was fine on Esso or Shell regular though. And now that is all I feed the Mk4 that replaced it.

Crude prices over the last quarter. Dropped about 25%.

My 3.0 V6 Jag can go through supermarket fuel like its gone out of fashion, but do similar sort of driving on Shell and its better, a bit better mpg. And Overall distance. However, I have now sold that and have a 1.9 Diesel.... better economy... I hope. My Citroen was really good on derv, 500-600 mile on a full tank.

Quite right too. The chancellor's effectively subsidising motoring at the moment by taking less tax than he was. That shortfall has to be made up elsewhere - where it's probably harder to avoid.
