Nope,

No legal right to any holiday ever basically even bank holidays etc

(Give or take some)

Steve

Erm, not strictly true ...

From Gov.uk

Almost all workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday per year (known as statutory leave entitlement or annual leave). An employer can include bank holidays as part of statutory annual leave.

For who? Schools get a good deal over Christmas usually and other parts of the public sector are usually doing well too.

Private sector isn't much worse off unless it's the service industry or retail where they usually end up working bank holidays but I'm not sure that's really that much of a big deal.

At least we are better off than America where the number of days holiday most people get is considerably lower than the UK.

So if everyone was off for 10 days at Christmas what would you do?

No pubs, no shops open, no cinemas, no amusements, cafes, etc etc....

It won't happen. Just because it is a festival in one religion doesn't mean everyone suffers. We don't do anything for hunekar (sp) Diwali or Chinese New Year in this country with bank holidays.

Whilst every employee has a right to holidays, there is no legal requirement for those holidays to be taken at a given time.

There is no automatic right for workers to have public holidays off, including Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, unless it’s in their contract.

Extra pay for working public holidays is optional, unless it is stated in an employee’s contract.

Quite. Lots of people work over Christmas. These are largely unobserved and unnoticed, but they keep the country running. Electricity, gas and water workers, emergency services, pub workers, taxi drivers, telecoms workers, security services, and of course the entertainment industry. These are just the ones I can think of in a moment. We, who are on holiday, enjoy and rely on the services that these people provide. They would certainly be missed if they all took two weeks off.

We just need to amend this right to just cover all it workers over the age of 35, with network and/or manager in their job title to be entitled to 10 days additional leave over christmas new year.

That way everyone's happy (or at least I will be which in the end is all that matters)

I'd rather get the time off during term time than Christmas. Being in work with no one else is the highlight of the job.

I'd agree for much of the year but all too often getting to work involves getting cold and wet in the dark and then while at work I have to sit in the cold (because to have the heating on in my office next to the swimming pool requires heating the swimming pool as well for some reason) and in the cold, damp darkness of winter I would rather be at home.

But yes - al other leave should be taken term time, the other holidays are too short to get everything done in otherwise!

But if you are the only one in then just move to another room with heating and work there. Like an IT room and play music/videos through the whiteboard while you work.

We used to be completely shut end of term which meant 8 days of our annual entitlement was already taken out the quota.

However, the last few years it has been opened a few extra days up to Christmas so that staff can come in and use less of their entitlement.

As a NM you never know when you need to be in, for example I had booked the last day of term off to take an extra day's holiday only to be called in yesterday so it's all swings and roundabouts.
