Sheridan Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I've now found why any of my VPP apps fails to start when deployed with Ac2 - it logs a 'exited due to fairplay failure' in the console. They are VPP apps - actually shows up with the little VPP flash in the corner in Ac2, yet still fail. I'm really struggling to get anywhere now. I can't manage 9.1 properly with Ac 1.7 as theres bits missing, AC2 doesn't work in so many ways and I'm struggling to get our meraki solution working. Makes the Hudl2's we bought a while ago look fantastic!

hhjj Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Maybe I can help. AC2 was completely redesigned and was meant to be used mainly for device enrollment into an MDM solution. Unfortunately they did not carry forward some critical features from AC1 that I need to use it as a stand-alone product. 1. Normally apps are tied to an Apple ID. With the new VPP managed distribution & ios 9, the apps are assigned to a device. If you get an error when trying to install an app using AC2 that was purchased with the new VPP model, it could mean that the app is not device-based assignable. The ONLY solution is to contact the developer and ask them to please check a box that allows the app to be assigned to devices and not just Apple IDs. 2. Apps are no longer on your hard drive. Yes, they really are re-downloaded every time. You could set up a caching server to help with this. When you restore a backup on an ipad, the apps are not restored. If you look in the apps section of the ipad in AC2 after a backup restore, you will see icons of all the apps that have an assigned VPP code for that device. They aren't really on the device. You can tell this by the little "VPP" blue triangle in the top right corner (I call them ghost apps). If you double click on those app icons, it will redownload & install those apps. That is not feasible for a lot of apps on a lot of ipads. I don't have any great solutions, but the best one I can think of is to put the Restore from Backup in a blueprint and add all of the apps [you thought were] contained in the backup to the Apps section of the blueprint so it will do it all at once. If that doesn't make sense, let me know. I've gotten very little sleep this week trying to figure all of this out.

Sheridan Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I managed to get as 1.7.2 working in OS X 10.11 but I don't think it's supported. The problem with the way apple have done this is iOS 9 is a fairly minor release but to deploy it you have to endlessly upgrade, which forces the vpp method as well. It's a lot of changes to test and absorb if you've just been happily managing iPads with the old ac. Plus the unfinished nature of ac2 hasn't helped. As for contacting apple support, life's too short! They've never responded or sorted any reported issues in the past.
Zoranp Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 After how many hours on last Friday evening, finally finished applying the restore from 'master' iPad backup. I was very disappointed! It finished restoring, but did not apply any apps and profile. Fair enough, apps/profile runs through blueprints now. At least I've got the correct wallpaper and iPad name This morning I've tried applying the blueprint (with apps and profile), and apps did install properly but profile couldn't because the iPad is not supervised! To supervise an iPad, it will erase everything and redownload the iOS! What is the point of having backup of supervised iPad if, the same supervison/backup cannot be applied to other iPads. To apply supervision to 30 iPads, means I have to go to each iPad and go through following steps: 1. Go through all iOS setup settings from iPad's welcome screen. 2. Move wanted app icons on the toolbar and recreate folders These steps takes time and makes the AC2 very unreliable and unfriendly. With Ac1.x, I had to only setup everything that was mention above on one iPad, and apply all these changes (apps, profile, wallpaper, wifi...) with only one click. I have sent feedback to AC2, but one couldn't fit, so I'll have to continue writing back to them again. I did not have any issues using AC1.x with iOS 9.0.2. I haven't tried yet with 9.1, but will soon, as I do give up with AC2.

Thanks Nick In case if you can't get the AC1.x running properly on 10.11, you can always try to go back to Yosemite and the run the AC1.x. As I've mentioned in my previous post below, I don't have any issues running Ac1.x on 10.11.
hhjj Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I am trying to write a procedure on how to restore a backup to a cart of ipads so they are all uniform and have password & server information saved (needed for the Kindergartners & 1st grade). This is what worked for me. We don't have an MDM but we are being forced to use AC2 anyway and it's been quite painful. I hope this works for you. It was a week of little sleep and many hours on the phone with various Apple techs. Procedure to push an image to selected devices using Apple Configurator 2.0: Select a supervised device that you configure exactly how you want it. If you want to restore the passwords on all devices, the backup must be encrypted. Actions->Advanced->Enable Encrypted Backups [*]Create backup I think I found a trick but I don't know if it is lacking in any areas. I used AC1 to set up an iPad and configured it the way I wanted (on another account on the same machine). Go through all setup screens. I shut down AC1 & opened AC2. I tweaked a few things (added encrypted backup, some new settings, etc.) and created a backup. After I restored the backup to another device, & prepared it, I didn't have ANY setup to do on the iPads. (not even a Hello screen). It popped up on the home screen as it was finishing up installing the apps. [*]Create 3 separate blueprints: "Restore from Backup", "Prepare", "Restrictive Profiles" [*]Create blueprint to restore from backup ONLY (do not add apps, profiles or device/wall paper changes to this blueprint) Target -> iPad Actions->Restore from Backup... Select the iPad backup, enter password when prompted (if encrypted). [*]Create blueprint to prepare devices Actions->Prepare... Configuration: Manual Do not enroll in MDM Check both Supervise devices & Allow to pair w/other computers Organization name Don't show any of these steps [*]Actions->Modify->Device Name... [*]Actions->Modify->Wallpapers... [*]Apps Section No apps will be restored from the backup, but it does restore app placement, folders & data once you've re-installed the apps. Add all the apps to this section that are contained in the backup (or others) [*]Profiles Section No profiles contained in the backup will be restored. Do not add any restrictive profiles to this blueprint (i.e. has "Restrictions" as a payload. I have not tested all possible payloads so there may be others). Add to this section all of the profiles you would like on your devices. [*]Create blueprint for restrictive profiles. [*]Attach iPads that have been erased and are unactivated. It is faster to do this on the iPad itself as opposed to using AC2 to do it. [*]Select all the iPads you would like to setup. [*]Apply Blueprints->Restore from Backup [*]VERY IMPORTANT: Do not look at the iPads to see if the backup worked. Go right to prepare. [*]Apply Blueprints->Prepare If the original iPad that was used to make the backup is also being prepared, you will get an error message "Could not perform… already been prepared." This happens because if a backup is being placed back on the original device (it tracks the UDID) then it will be automatically prepared & supervised upon backup restore so the second step is not needed. The rest of the "prepare" blueprint actions (apps, device name, profiles…) will have to be added manually (or create a separate blueprint for all of these options). Results: If you set it up to skip the opening screens, the most you should have to scroll through is: Hello, WiFi, Location Services, Get Started Device is Supervised Apps installed App data & passwords restored (if backup was encrypted) App placement restored Folders restored Profiles added Device & Wallpaper name changed [*]Apply Blueprints->Restrictive Profile

Zoranp Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Guys, finally got it working this morning!!! Thanks to StealthBlue10 on apple forum. I've used my 'master' supervised iPad, with profiles, apps, folders, wallpaper settings...just the way I want to have. In blueprints, select the blueprint (with added apps and profile/s), right click, and run the backup of your 'master' iPad to your blueprint. Connect other iPads, select them all and apply the same blueprint (with the backup), to all iPads. You'll be asked to restore the iPads, say yes to this, and then you will be asked to prepare your iPads to supervise them, select yes. When everything is finished, you should have all your iPads look exactly the same as your 'master' iPad, and the best thing of all, they are all supervised When devices are finished, I get some error message (16346) on my AC2 screen. I only select Stop, and iPads still look fine. Link to StealthBlue10 instructions Cheers
ass17 Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I've got both running fine on 10.11 I'm still using 1.7 as we only use it to manage school owned devices that we set basic options like restrictions, wifi network, certs, web clips. Each iOS device is running 9.1 all using the same iCloud account. I've had a quick look at ac2 and it offers nothing extra in profiles that wasn't already available in 1.7 I will move to ac2 at some point because I like the idea of blueprints and retracting licenses from devices and reassigning them. AC2 is in basic form an MDM so we don't need anything else but we do have Profile Manager within OSX server if required.

Yes, but the backup has to be done onto your blueprint, and then you apply the same blueprint to other iPads.
dloudon96 Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 When I rang Apple a few weeks ago about the font size changing on the iPad lock screen since iOS 9 and Apple Configurator 2 come out and they said there's no way to change the font size on Apple Configurator as it has changed because of iOS 9 and that's how it'll always be. Bit annoying as I like the old font size as it's easy to read, bold and clearly says the iPad name, where as the font is too small and not bold now [emoji53]

dloudon96 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 You need to update the Mac software first just to make sure you're fully up to date, you can do this by going into the App Store, either by going to the spotlight at the top right hand corner or by clicking on the bar at the bottom of the screen, click on updates, then there should be an option to update the Apple Configurator software and it will update to the latest version. 1
Strawdog Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 AppStore -> Updates, you'll need to update to OS:X 10.11.1 first though. AppStore gave me a couple of errors when I tried updating to AC2.1 but after a reboot it had disappeared from my available updates and also wasn't showing in my installed updates but when I ran AC it was showing as 2.1 1
