Sheridan Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I'm just trying to use AC2 to apply profiles and Apps to a single ipad (that ironically came to use becuase a student had pin locked it) 10 Apps, 1 profile - fails every single time with the same error. Apply the apps one by one and it works. What a crock. No point using an MDM, it offers nothing extra in terms of locking down these things.
Strawdog Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Was having a real headache with one of our iPads that appeared to have gone through AC2 fine - I couldn't sign in with the AppleID password when opening one of the apps, turns out the auto date/time hadn't worked (despite all the other iPads working fine and this iPad having a working wifi connection). I tethered it to my phone and it then updated allowing me to then sign in with the AppleID password. Worth checking date/time is correct if you've got an issue with signing in - when the date/time is out it can't confirm a secure site's certificate is valid so it will fail connections.

I'll have a look at that, but I'm not using Profile manager - just AC to deploy ipads. I wonder if thats another issue!

At current, my iPads aren't talking to Profile Manager.. Just autoenrolling themselves. I think it's a routing issue. But all of my setup is being done on Configurator at the moment.
Sheridan Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I'm trying a similar thing - a blueprint for a set of restrictions, and one for a list of (free) apps. The restrictions blueprint will work sometimes but the apps one fails every time. So I can get a configuration profile on, but have to add each app manually which is no good. I can get them done with 1.7 - looks like we'll have to wait until apple sort this buggy mess out.

Well the reason I went with this approach is because I couldn't get "Put wifi in" and "Enroll to Profile Manager" working in one step. No matter how I ordered the profiles (Does ordering even matter...?) it wouldn't work, so I had to do a two-step process. So I split it into General Settings (Wifi, Proxy, Restrictions) and Set-Specific (AutoEnroll, Apps)

Strawdog Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Just discovered that Location Services is automatically turned off even if it was enabled on the backup you've taken :\ Enabling it is another manual step that has to be done on each individual iPad (along with then locking it down through Restrictions) if you want to use it (e.g. for Dropbox background uploading, etc.).

Could it be something to do with the "Allow managed apps to store data in iCloud" setting*? Is that switched on for you? * Or any other iCloud setting? They're all unchecked from Allow iCloud backup to Allow automatic sync while roaming. Are any of those enabled for you?
livelee Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Regarding the apps not working / needing to sign into iTunes. I was having this issue. It happened to most but not all apps that happened to be on the macbook that itunes had downloaded. This was using a normal apple ID. Since signing out of AC2 with that ID and signing into it using a VPP account, any apps i've installed have been ok. Good luck. This product is a nightmare.

When I open an app on the iPad it prompts for the Apple ID username and Password! Da hell? Apple Config 2 uses Managed Distribution, the app you have is a free one downloaded via iTunes. Any app downloaded from iTunes is considered a "personal one" and requires the same Apple ID on the iPads. Garacesh Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Oh, yes, of course. Always use VPP. Downloading an app with a non-VPP account will have the app request iTunes credentials AFAIK. The app has to be 'purchased' though the VPP account and then login to VPP account via Configurator. AFAIK (but I may be wrong) VPP 'versions' of apps don't require an iTunes account. They're literally coded to have that bit taken out or have some kind of flag or marker that says not to. Non-VPP apps don't have this marker (or do have this code that asks for an account) 1

Spent an hour on the phone to Apple support this afternoon to fix an issue with an ipad that was refusing to supervise with AC1. The advisor on the phone said that Apple are very keen on hearing all issues you guys might be facing with AC2 and any feedback etc... Many MDM's allow; remote wiping and removal of Activation Lock; Classroom controls for teachers; Grey Screening of iPads when teachers want focus upfront Locking to single URL Updating of Single App at timed intervals on iPads Timed updates of iOS Many more............

That's what I'm doing. I'm not using any third-party MDM and you don't even have to use Profile Manager.. Profile Manager just allows you to change things 'on the fly' over the network, rather than having to hook the machines physically back to Configurator. Edit: Using a macbook to deploy apps to a trolley of iPads is exactly what I'm doing now. Only difference is I'm not using local copies of the installers anymore, I have to use the VPP account. Did you not read it, Configurator 2 uses managed distribution, which has nothing to do with MDM....?

I think you are confusing a VPP account with an ITUNES account. AC2 no longer uses iTunes at all, it uses Managed Distribution, you will buy both free and paid for apps via VPP and choose managed distribution as your licence choice. You then log into AC2 with your VPP details to see your licences which can then by pushed out over USB to iPads. 1
