donsalvati Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Only reason I did it with IPA is because with the other way I had many Placeholders empty and stuck on "installing" doing nothing for a long time. So ended up going back having to install them manually again, and all random apps. Was never the same App that wouldn't install. IPA way, it did it first time, and works for me at the moment. Yes you are right VPP is the way to do it. But haven't got time to do that. Have spent 2 days figuring out a way to get them all supervised and working with no errors. Plus each iPad has around 40 apps. Will be something for me to do another day. That link is good though...makes more sense now.

I have a fairly basic setup- a single blueprint, with a single profile and around 20 apps (via VPP). I don't have an MDM system, just trying to use AC2 to configure a bunch of iPads. My process of attempting to apply the blueprint to a single iPad: -Update iPad to latest iOS verion (9.2.1 at time of writing) -'Supervise' the iPad -Erase all content and settings (just to be safe) -'Supervise' the iPad again -Apply the Blueprint The Blueprint appears to apply ok- copies of apps are assigned to my test iPad, the apps download etc. However at the very end of the process it gives an error about being unable to apply profile to unsupervised device. I click 'stop' (the only option given), which takes me back to the devices screen in AC2. And sure enough, the iPad that I had previously supervised is now saying that it is not supervised. How/why does the act of applying a blueprint cause it to become unsupervised?! Edit: the exact error message is: An unexpected error has occurred with iPad Profile installation failed This profile can only be installed on a supervised device. [MCInstallationErrorDomain - 0xFA1 (4001)] I think I'll try re-creating the profile and have another shot. What a time waster though! Edit 2: I think I've found the answer- I didn't notice that within my Blueprint there was a setting to 'Erase all content and settings' (which removes supervision of course!). So when I was applying the blueprint it would wipe the iPad, install the apps and then nor be able to apply the profile. As an Apple newbie (you may have guessed) it would be nice if Apple built in to AC2 something that checked for and prevented a blueprint that has a profile, but is also set to erase all contents and settings. When I skip that part in the setup assistant it does it for me.

Plug iPad in to Mac Right click iPad and choose Restore - to restore the factory set IOS Then "Prepare" the iPad. Then apply my latest Blueprint to install the profiles and apps. Or should I be looking at some form of complete "backup" procedure, in which case how do I create the backup? Do I do the above and then create the backup?

If you skip location services in the setup assistant its disabled by default, same with Siri.

Restore iPad, add profiles add apps. Create a backup. On subsequent iPads restore this backup. If apps need updating, add to a restored iPad from backup, then create a new backup to push to the other iPads. Option B. Restore iPad. Create and use Blueprint to add profiles Create and use Blueprint to add apps. (seems to fail with error - try rebooting MAC to clear) To sort remaining iPads Restore iPad use Blueprints to add profiles use Blueprints to add apps. (seems to fail with error - try rebooting MAC to clear) If apps need updating - edit Blueprint which adds apps.

I now just prepare the iPAD, then apply three blueprints, 1 for security settings, 1 to apply certificates and 1 to apply apps depending which department want the iPad. They are just going to learn that if they put the apps in specific folders they'll lose that if they get returned to be reset. I've also had to advise the teachers that they need to watch out for the following which the students can alter: Change Time(Most important) Ipad name Moving apps in to folders to hide them? Set alarms Change the language
Wolverine-911 Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I've just been reading about iOS 9.3 and it clearly mentions the ability to create new configuration payloads with home screen layout and many of the other features so sorely missed and broken at the moment in Apple Configurator 2. I think I'm going to abandon this until that's released, when in theory I shouldn't need a backup as everything can be done with the configuration profile.
donsalvati Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I noticed when I signed into VPP on Configurator that none of my purchased Apps appeared. I spoke with Apple, and they confirmed that only Apps purchased with Manage Distribution would appear, so I will need to Email to transfer them from Redemption codes to Manage Distribution. Could anyone please confirm that once this has been transferred to Manage Distribution, that I would be able to transfer the Apps to the iPads? As a deployment on a per device basis? I don't want to invite them to users as its not a per user based device. It is there for many students to use. When I looked into this a few years ago Apple advised me to create an Apple ID per device. Which I don't want to do. I was hoping this was now changed?
