I've just been reading about iOS 9.3 and it clearly mentions the ability to create new configuration payloads with home screen layout and many of the other features so sorely missed and broken at the moment in Apple Configurator 2. I think I'm going to abandon this until that's released, when in theory I shouldn't need a backup as everything can be done with the configuration profile.

I've read quite a bit of this thread but confess to not having read every post so apologies if this has already been asked. Has anyone successfully managed to deploy a blueprint with a backup attached to it and be supervised? We want our iPads to be supervised and have the apps organised in certain folders etc but it's just not working. We're getting into a loop where it will add a backup but not be supervised, meaning we cannot get the unlock token etc or prevent passcodes being added. If we supervise the iPad, it won't deploy the backup because it complains it has already been prepared and needs to be restored. Once you do this it adds the backup but does not supervise and then round and round you go. I can't see any way around this, am I missing something?!

We solved this a different way in the end. The script didn't work at all, probably due to roaming network user accounts and nothing being saved on the local iMac. WGM was not an option as we have a Yosemite server. What we did was log on as root, skip the setup and then copy the com.apple.SetupAssistant file to the User Template folder. Now, any user that logs on does not get the prompt at all. One possible side effect was that from the image captured from this iMac, Profile Manager now thinks each iMac is the same as the one that was used to capture the image. It's a very minor problem as we manually enroll into PM anyway and we just have to click a different button, but it's frustrating that I don't know precisely why it's doing that. We're trialling a Yosemite deployment at the moment but one thing that keeps coming up is the Sign In With Apple ID prompt each time an AD user logs on. Once Person A has logged on and ignored this prompt, it never comes back regardless of which mac Peron A uses. If a new user, Person B, logs on for the first time, this prompt comes up even if Person A has already been on that specific mac and skipped this prompt. Once skipped it never appears for Person B again but will happen for Person C, D E etc. We know we can leave it and hopefully students will just skip but there must be a way to just make the prompt not appear in the first place. Does anyone know how we could achieve this please?

I discovered the issue myself in the end. It was to do with the way it was bound to AD. One stupid tick box, completely irrelevant anyone would assume, decides whether the profile is pushed out as the profile or in addition to the stock dock you get anyway.

We're testing out Yosemite at the moment using 1 iMac as a server, 2 test iMacs as clients and also our 2 technical iMacs as clients. We've enrolled devices and they are visible in Profile Manager and we can push settings to them. We've created a profile and pushed it to the Technical OU so whenever we log on to an iMac we get certain dock settings. This has applied out to 3 of the iMacs but the last one it does not work. We have tried un-enrolling, removing placeholders, removing settings one by one etc and no luck. The best we can get is that when we log on to this specific iMac, it adds the dock items we want to the default dock, meaning it can at least communicate but it's screwing up somewhere. If I log either of us on to any other iMac, our profiles are completely fine with only the dock items we created being deployed. I can then update this and it auto pushes out. If I log either of us on to this specific iMac it simply doesn't want to know and just adds the dock on to the default one. I can have both iMacs with the same OS logged on as the same user side by side but they see different things. How is this happening? Does anyone know where it's going wrong at all please? I'm seriously stumped now, it just makes no sense to me!

Has anyone managed to sysprep yet with the built in apps removed by any chance?

Thanks Quackers. Am I correct in assuming you mean to copy it to System/Library/User Template/English.lproj folder? If so, do you know where to put it within that folder? There's no corresponding Dock folder already there.

Ah, yes that's correct. Thankfully we hadn't rolled that out site wide yet! In that case I've tried to help you and you've ended up helping me!

I'm trying to lock down our iMacs so that students cannot change the desktop wallpaper but am struggling. I've got the right click option on files removed and the default background is set to the school wallpaper but students can still right click an image in Safari and just select "Use Image as Desktop Picture" which obviously is not desirable. I've done some research and found a way of locking this option down on an account by manually making the files with picture extensions and relevant names and then locking them, so when students click this option nothing happens because the file already exists and is locked. This would fix my issue, however students unfortunately do not see this setting. It's applied in the Library folder but each user seems to get the Safari folder where the setting needs to be in their user folder instead, not the Library one. I can't log hundreds of students on to each Mac and do this so I'm rather stuck. Is there any way of changing where Safari points to? Or if not is there another way of locking it? I've tried using Profile Manager to lock this setting too but it made no difference sadly. Right clicking in Safari appears immune. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I don't really understand how the home mapping works properly so please forgive me if this sounds ridiculous but the only difference we noticed by ticking that option was that instead of all files appearing on the desktop of the Mac, they appeared in a folder accessible in the dock that can then open in finder. Everything was still accessible and worked as before, just without the permission issue.

Does anyone know if there is a way of copying the launchpad layout and applying to all users that log on? I've grouped the launchpad into categories but if I log on as a different user I get the standard layout again. I need all users who log on to receive the same layout if at all possible? Please beware that I'm a relative novice in the Mac field so feel free to respond as if you were talking to someone who had never used a Mac before . Thanks in advance for any help anyone could offer!

We are running Windows 8.1 and Mavericks 10.9.5 side-by-side now without issues using SMB. We had a very similar issue, every time a user logged onto an iMac it would give them a permission in Windows for "Everyone" set to deny, so users could not access their own desktop and we couldn't even edit it without powershell. We noticed the issue occurred as soon as the Library & Spotlight folders were created during logon on the iMac. To fix it we just ticked "Force local home directory on startup disk" when binding to AD and now users can log on without this permission being set.
