Changing Home Directories and maybe profile paths

Normally when someone gets married they are happy with just there log on and display name been changed there not to fussed about their home drive.

 

However the head wants there homedrive changing to reflect their name.

 

I have gone in to AD renamed them changed the display name and log in. This is fine.

 

I have then found the home drive right clicked and renamed ...

then in home Folder connect H: \\dc\%username%

I get the error. The home folder could not be created because : The network name cannot be found ?

 

Do I need to do anything with sharing?

I have also gone in and set the connect h: \\dc\hardcodedusername and no luck.

honestly I think id just create a new account log in once so it creates all the redirected folders then copy their stuff across and disable the old account

When you rename a directory which is a share, you need to re-setup the share.

Just create a new account and copy the data over. Job done.

We rename the account in AD and update the profile and home drive path within AD with the users new surname.

We then go to their old user folder on the server, unshared it, rename the folder to their new name, and then reshare it.

Are your home folders individually shared, rather than in a root share (this looks to be the case)? Doing this has a big effect on performance (depending on the number of users), and as stated above, you'll need to change the share properties as well as the folder properties.

It is however Ranger creates them??

 

how would you go about re-sharing the folder?

The way I have tried is right click properties sharing > advanced sharing

Tick in share this folder.

Permissions remove everybody and added the new username with allow all.

This works

 

However if i go in to start and search i can type \\dc\newuser and the folder appears in the search ( I cant get access unless im that person) but none of the other folders appear in the search.

 

I can go in properties and hide the folder BUT none of the other home Drives are hidden on the server ( but yet dont appear in the search)

Is there a $ at the end of any of the other folder or share names? That hides the folders in Explorer.

For our staff who marry - we create a new account, copy over data, remove old account from internal mail groups, then re-direct any emails to old account to the new account.

 

An OOF is applied to their old account advising of new one, then old account is closed after a month or so, with emails migrated across.

If you add Domain Admins to the Share Permissions (or just the account you are using to update the AD account), you should be able to set it.

@3s-gtech has a strong point of using $ at the end of the share name. Hiding it means no one can see the share when going to \\dc\ which can mitigate attempts to access these shares by those that should not.

We rename everything and do not create new accounts.

 

Usernames, Email accounts, Alias, home drive folders the whole lot. We went through a massive cleanup operation a few years and changed everyone's log in names. I had to align everyone's home drive to their username and it took a few weeks out of hours .

Yup, we just rename too. No issues if you're methodical, with Exchange and Lync I wouldn't want the hassle.

 

Check to see if the share name ends with $, even if the folder name doesn't.
