Ripleys Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I know these things are very old but we have had 4 sanyo projectors in the same room in the space of 2 days to get a teachers whiteboard up and running. All 4 turn off after 20 seconds to a minute. His original projector was working fine before the summer holidays. I have seen tuts on cleaning and rejigging the thermal switch but none of this seems to work. I have had the projectors turned on in our office and stayed on for around 10 minutes before manually powering them down however, when I go back to the teachers classroom to install it, I get the auto-shutdown. All settings have been checked. Bulbs reseated/replaced; nothing.

Ripleys Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 I get visuals from the connected PC. Can use the pen. When I have the board pulled down when Im installing the projector, itll stay on for a while until I pull it back up. It varies; very annoying.

phillyrovers Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Hi Ripleys, This line intrigues me: "When I have the board pulled down when I'm installing the projector, it'll stay on for a while until I pull it back up" I have a thought as to what is happening, but I need to know what the power light on the projector is doing when the unit has gone off.....is it off, solid red, or flashing red? The 3 states above mean very different things, so knowing what that power has done when the unit has gone off would be VERY useful. Thank you
Ripleys Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 Blinks red for a few minutes then a solid red. We have just had that building's DB Boards replaced. That was my first thought after the 3rd projector done this. I have also tried a different power cable... a one that isn't fed into the projector arm, same outcome.
DangPro Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 When you tested on a desktop you said the projector stayed on for 10 minutes with no issue. After mounting the projector it would cut off in a minute or two. Normally when the projector is mounted it is upside down and on your desktop it will be right side up. Can you test the projector upside down on your desk? This will determine if the orientation is affecting the unit.
phillyrovers Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Hi Ripleys, DangPro's troubleshooting step above is a good one to test. Though the blinking power LED and then going solid red tells us that the unit has gone into a normal power down routine, like it has received a Power Off Infra-Red command. You don't have Infra-Red devices that have been introduced recently that could be affecting the Infra-Red input? Another question would be whether the fans are running at the time the light is flashing. Another possibility is whether the lamp is on its way out as well, the orientation of the projector will have an affect on this, which I will explain below: Within the projector lamp there are 2 cathodes, which when electricity is passed through them cause an Arc, which ignites the gasses in the lamp to produce the white light. Over time the cathodes start to get further and further apart and the chances of a lamp not striking, or going off during use increases. Gravity has an affect on the cathodes when the unit is upside down (i.e. installed in the normal position) in that it pulls the cathodes further apart than when the unit is sat on a desk, in particular when the lamp has really warmed up. Which is why when the unit is on your desk it may well function correctly and when the unit has cooled when installed on the arm for around 20 minutes. I would suggest trying a new or known working lamp into the units as well and seeing what happens )

Can you test the projector upside down on your desk? Sorry for the late response. I usually test them the way they are mounted on the projector arm; bolts on top. I will test bolts down, and update on the result.

If there is anyone using these and has had to completely replace them with a different, newer make/model of projector, what are yous buying? We have a specific cradle that is being used. I can take a picture and post it on here.
bladedanny Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 We've just replaced all of ours on promethean +2 V1 boards (the round pole ones). We replaced them with NEC M332XS and a retro fit mount from RA.
GaRobbie Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 If you wanted to continue to use the V1 stand and a Promethean projector I would recommend looking at the PRM-45v1. The mounting bracket is a little different though believe there is still an upgrade kit for the conversion (ABP2V1-PROJ-UPG-BRKT) Also, the projector shutting down could be related to power fluctuations and an additional idea to test out would be to using an extension cable to connect the unit to a different mains outlet.
Ripleys Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) I put a really old, dim bulb into the projector yesterday, although I couldn't see sh*t on it, it didn't turn off for about 10 until I manually turned it off. We have the boards on the bottom of the second page. If I'm reading it right, the upgrade would be the PRM35v1. Ripleys Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 I managed to get the projector working. I ordered a brand new bulb off of ebay and it's running fine now. Thanks for all your help guys. Is there anyway to close the thread or label it solved?
chewee Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 thank you, i was having the same issue, swapped the bulb and its fine, i think it could be the cathodes in the lamp.
