sippo Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 The US Navy has agreed to pay Microsoft at least $9m to help secure computers running Windows XP after it failed to replace the aged OS before support ended. US Navy pays out millions to Microsoft to keep running Windows XP | ZDNet
hardtailstar Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 You'd think they would pay for the update to 7 or 8.1!
localzuk Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 XP took a rather long time to get accreditation from the military side of things, so moving off it will cost a fortune as they will need to approve whatever will replace it. So $9m is pocket change really!
sted Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 You'd think they would pay for the update to 7 or 8.1! id imagine there's some very specific mission critical software that either doesn't work with or hasn't been fully tested with newer windows versions that cant be managed without. Just imagine having to recertify all the software that runs say a nuclear sub for windows 7

jtoland Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Why dont they just update and run in compatibility mode i have nether had a problem with that and running software evan running software for windows 95 like dazel reminds me so much of my childhud
unixman_again Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 The DOD is the worlds largest employer and I suspect many other departments other than the navy still have XP. Being big has an advantage; they can pay for Microsoft to keep the XP development team going. Unfortunately, the patches developed won't be released to the world. The NHS could certainly use them as I think they still have 75% of their machines running XP.
john Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Its scary how much of UK NHS is still on XP, a Drs I go to I die a little inside when I see my records are being accessed on an XP PC and then to make it worse they were on a TS the other visit to get to some other system and that was 2003 This is a VERY wealthy NHS trust as well so can imagine how poorly the small rural ones are doing when this is funded in a large affluent area of London
3s-gtech Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 It's when they all jump to 7 thinking it's going to give them a fresh 10 year countdown, that'll be fun to explain... "You may have been running XP for thirteen years with patches still being released, but that was the exception! Here's a copy of Windows 10. And no, your ancient software using Borland DBE or SQLA 5 probably won't work."
featured_spectre Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 And no, your ancient software using Borland DBE or SQLA 5 probably won't work." Anything running a paradox database or on Borland can still work with Windows 7...You just have to know how to do it.
3s-gtech Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I know, have managed it with both now I come to think of it. No idea what the Navy runs, I'd imagine getting a new nuclear_reactor_management.dll (yes I know, I know) written would be fairly tricky though, and would have to go through massive approval testing!
PotNoodleTech Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Considering there are many bog standard public sector bodies etc who have not managed to meet the deadline - I don't think it's unreasonable for the military to need special consideration given that you can't just run a nuke sub in "compatibility mode" and hope for the best.
