Meldrew Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 We had just given SWGfL notice to quit - we started to wonder if it was 90 seconds rather than 90 days! Meldrew
Oaktech Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Just seen this on status.rm.com I'm still seeing this now with 6 hours to the start of school. We cannot get rid of this service fast enough.
newpersn Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 I'm still seeing this now with 6 hours to the start of school. We cannot get rid of this service fast enough. That's been saying that since Friday. I just hope it's a problem with their monitoring software.
drdos256 Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Reports of slow internet today .... any suggestions for alternative providers? (we have Smoothwall if that helps...)
FN-GM Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Reports of slow internet today .... any suggestions for alternative providers? (we have Smoothwall if that helps...) Zen Internet. Best thing we ever did. However I have heard good reports about @SchoolsBroadband 2
drdos256 Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Reports today of "slow internet" .... is it just us today?
AJWhite1970 Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Lots of reports of slow here as well, a Kerboodle sign-up session this morning was a bit of a disaster. Going to reboot our proxy servers tonight but my staff.proxy connection isn't great either. Andrew
CyberDrac Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 We found ourselves caught up in a DDoS attack (DNS amplification) from China against a number of Russian websites last week. If you have the ability to monitor the activity on your WAN link you may wish to check whether you're being affected by something similar. Symptoms included extremely slow or intermittent DNS resolution resulting in extremely slow Internet access.
Opendium_Steve Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 We found ourselves caught up in a DDoS attack (DNS amplification) from China against a number of Russian websites last week. If you have the ability to monitor the activity on your WAN link you may wish to check whether you're being affected by something similar. Symptoms included extremely slow or intermittent DNS resolution resulting in extremely slow Internet access. Exposing a recursive DNS resolver to the outside world is a very bad idea - not only does it mean you can be used as a DDoS amplifier, but it also opens you up to the possibility of DNS poisoning to redirect your own users to malicious websites. As always, make sure you understand which services you're exposing to the internet, and close off any you don't need.
CyberDrac Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 We didn't believe that it was operating in that state, however we were able to identify and resolve the issue.
SchoolsBroadband Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 We've seen quite a lot more network traffic than normal over the past few days but that's because schools come back, turn on their PC's and iPads they may not have done for ages and download a billion updates for Windows and IOS. You should see the bandwidth graphs and what traffic goes where, very interesting. Ref an open recursive DNS @SteveHill is correct, that's a really really bad idea......
newpersn Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 anyone having problems in the SWGFL area? Noticed it crawing this morning. Still slow now...
localzuk Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 They've had some issues this morning. There was a complete outage from 6:50 until about 7:45. They've got issues with their transparent proxy also, with poor performance also. RM Internet & E-safety Status 1

kidpressingbuttons Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Some sites have been taking over 10 minutes to load here since the start of term. Connection is becoming increasingly useless. Dont even bother calling support now- my staff are just used to constant rubbish speeds. 2
AJWhite1970 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 If you have your own web caching on-site (Smoothwall, squid, dansguardian et al) then I suggest you contact them to opt out of using their cache farm and have your proxy server IP set to run straight through. We did it a couple of weeks ago and our service has been flying ever since. Some of my teachers even bought me cake so great is the "new" service.....
kennysarmy Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 No problems here in Cheltenham using the SWGfL service since the start of term....

We dont have nothing on site...
Opendium_Steve Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 There have been serious problems in Somerset for the past few days - the transparent HTTPS proxy has been more or less dead (we were seeing speeds of 17Kbps yesterday at multiple schools - i.e. dial-up modem speeds) despite RM's status page saying that it is "stable" and one of our customers has had a complete outage since yesterday morning (BT network problems, apparently affecting other schools too - luckily they have an ADSL line as a backup). As far as I'm aware, there are still ongoing DNS problems with Somerset's DNS server (but that one is specifically Somerset, not SWGfL). I'm hearing a lot of complaints at the moment, quite a few schools looking elsewhere for their Internet access. That said, SWGfL have proven to be relatively responsive to complaints on Twitter.
localzuk Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 Just had it drop out again for a few minutes - no response from the proxy servers. This is getting beyond the joke now.
witch Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 We haven't seem to have had the other issue you have - maybe because we are with a different broadband provider, but the proxy did just drop out for a couple of minutes
Meldrew Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Just had it drop out again for a few minutes - no response from the proxy servers. This is getting beyond the joke now. Agreed - just had the same here. Can't get away from SWGfL fast enough now. Meldrew
CyberNerd Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I'm surprised you guys have lasted this long. Our head wouldn't (and didn't) stand for that sort of service.
