This is to take whole books in pdf format and convert them to word to be printed out on a braille printer. SEN TA is using free online ones that won't handle a large document like a book and we'd like to get a proper one Simon
aleach2 Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 We just use Adobe Acrobat (full product). Works OK for us. Can get a little stuck with tables and graphics.

However if the PDF was created as an image, you're stuck. Which is why I love the fact my printer is also a scanner/copier and the software for it has OCR.

rich_tech Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 We use acrobat and office2013 here too, tables are the main pita with them I see. Also onenote can be used for ocr and works ok

SimpleSi Posted June 27, 2015 Author Posted June 27, 2015 I think I've sussed it Once the pdf is uploaded to Google Drive - right click on the pdf and select open with google docs What it seems to do is then try to convert each page into text but it interleaves the pdf pages with the converted pages So page 1 is original pdf - page 2 if converted page 1 etc I'll have to try this on a real book with the TA on monday Simon

All you have to do is go to drive.google.com, upload your PDF, right-click it and select Open with Google Docs. After a short while you will end up with document containing the OCR'd text and an image of each page. http://i.imgur.com/7Ylx6eA.png 1

I assume you upload a file, wait a minute or so, then a Google Doc file appears somewhere? Edit: Sorry, didn't realise there was a second page of replies - just read the rest, makes sense now. For PDF files, we only look at the first 10 pages when searching for text to extract. Just read this from site - so I don't think its going to work for whole PDF books Simon 1
Mistert89 Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I bought Nuance Education version. Works very well, including forms as well as straight text. Other option is the OCR in the packages you get with MFC print/scan devices (Nuance paper port does quite a lot)
Arthur Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Just read this from site - so I don't think its going to work for whole PDF books I have only ever used the OCR feature for very short PDFs so I have never come across that limitation. Thanks for mentioning it though.
