Just been shown an interesting link to a report on the result of job evaluation in Blackburn and Darwen.

I didn't think this was possible so I'm quite concerned as they are a neighbouring authority. How long will it be before Lancashire county follows suite.

 

I wonder where IT support and Network managers came in their new pay scale.

I was told when i started my job (3 years ago) that my pay had already been evaluated under the new 'National Strategy' and IT jobs across the U.K. had already been evaluated. So anyone that has started a position in the last three years should be ok, this is what i was led to believe by out personnel manager.

Around Nottingham they are making it clear no support jobs in schools have been evaluated yet and its takeing place in the next 12 to 18months. Perhaps it's Nottinghamshire only but I do know we haven’t been evaluated

It's possible that your schools have been hiring and setting their own scales i wasn't very clear. They should now be drawing up a job spec and then sending it to the local authority then it is returned with a pay scale that fits the new national framework.

 

If your position was evaluated when you were hired then you'll be ok but if your school hasn't been doing this then your position will be up for evaluation.

 

I can only comment on what i was told. Apparently some authorities are doing things slightly differently they are allowed to 'ignore' certain academic skills to level the playing field between 'skilled' and 'unskilled' workers this means that certain aspects of 'professional' roles don't count so if you fall into this then you can be undervalued.

 

They do seem to keep moving the goal posts though.

We have yet to hear the outcome of this in Norfolk it was supposed to be completed in April, bearing in mind we have only just this month received our 2.45% pay increase from April anyway.

My jobs up for review this year and am hanging on till sept incase it has gone up. Im a Senior Tech @ 16k. Does it look likely to go up much?

could go up.. my fella is a senior tech on 18k in lancashire...

i'm not even touching 13k as a regular tech :-(

Yeah me too, i am based in stockton also, where abouts in stockton are you. My pay before was poor and still is now.

Schools still like to include technician in their job titles because in schools technician means low pay and very few will pay above scale 5 as that's a silly amount of money for just a technician. [sarcasm] Isn't it??? [/sarcasm]

 

Skills don’t seem to be factored into it because that word hangs there and you can’t have someone with that title being paid the same amount as a teachers starting pay.

I still get called Technician even though my official title is Network Manager I dont mind it off the kids because they dont know any better but others......

I often wear an id badge with my name & job title (Network Manager), when called 'technician' I have been known to look around & say sorry, I cannot see any technicians You get puzzled looks from the kids if you do that!

Yep i've had that on occasion. I've even had the odd new member of staff come in and leave scanning for me to do and one request for "40 copies of this CD for tomorrow". Needless to say it didn't happen and they left with instructions of where to buy CD's and to use their department CD burner.

 

It's the mentality some staff have worked in education for a long time and are used to support staff being there to do what ever is asked. They don't seem to understand that some of use are as qualified as they are and similar in 'rank' in the school. Once they get the idea that a school doesn't hire a network manager to scan pictures you get more respect.
