It sounds like the US has been quite canny and waited for them to go to a country with which they have a good extradition treaty before nabbing them for corruption.

 

According to the BBC Mr Blatter's rival for the Fifa presidency - described the development as "a sad day for football"... personally, I think it might be a good day for football.

 

Only South American officials today, but hopefully the start of sorting some things out with FIFA.

Yeah the cynic in me suspects that these chaps would all have been supporting the other guy, and suddenly Blatter has the majority he needs to carry another term.

 

FIFA are long overdue a very thorough investigation though. I wonder how many offices are currently shredding every bit of paper / data they can lay their hands on?

I'm not so sure. All this happened on Blatter's watch and I cannot see how his position is tenable any more. FIFA have been corrupt for years and this has been a long time coming (in the same way it was for the IOC a few years back) and if he doesn't go or is re-elected I cannot see how they can continue.

 

One thing I'm sure of is that Blatter would never have the decency or honour to resign

Blatter has no decency or honour full stop. I suspect he is at the very heart of what goes on but is clever enough to put enough people between himself and any wrong-doing. However, the timing of this has played into his hands. He will appear to be the squeaky clean one and will be re-elected on a promise to investigate any corruption. He cannot live without FIFA, however FIFA could (and should) live without him.

 

When he's no longer there to cover his own tracks, that's when his world will come tumbling down around him.
