Hi All,

I'm working on two laptops at the minute that don't have desktop icons. We use folder redirection to give the laptops desktop icons . Now usually putting gpupdate in cmd and a restart or two would normally fix this issue. I've tried gpupdate /force and delprof. I've also checked that the laptops are in AD and in the correct OU as well as re-joining the domain. Any ideas?

Cheers

run a cmd locally

'GPresult /h C:\gpreport.html /user:DOMAIN\USERNAMEWITHPROBLEM'

do a /? for the switches for doing it from a remote computer.

That will tell you exactly what is being applied and also if the policy is failing for any reason.

Also if you think a profile might be the issue try this too;-

delete and regedit

  • C:\Users\USERNAME
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Here's what I found when running that @beancole

Group Policy Infrastructure Failed 07/05/2015 14:25:30

Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below.

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Note: Due to the GP Core failure, none of the other Group Policy components processed their policy. Consequently, status information for the other components is not available.

Additional information may have been logged. Review the Policy Events tab in the console or the application event log for events between 07/05/2015 14:25:28 and 07/05/2015 14:25:30.

check that the sysvol share is actually shared on the domain controller, (which it will be.) Do you have multiple DC's as it sounds like GP is not replicating to them all.

That said these issues above don't really happen any more. So like @GuyJD says its probably a DNS issue.

Not something silly like the network adaptor becoming available only after login? We had a laptop a while back that did this and in the end needed a BIOS update to solve, even though the company denied there was any issue

interesting haven't tried that! makes perfect sense. Was it a Toshiba by chance?

An ASUS/ACER. 3 months we were going back and forth. I think they knew there was an issue and were just waiting for their techs/suppliers to produce a fix. Or check it isn't dropping the connection after login. Can't remember the issue but I remember a laptop doing this when it was using the manufacturer's applications rather than the Windows built in ones. The issue ended up being something like a dropped connection during the handover between the Windows drivers that were loaded up for the login screen and the third party ones that were loaded up as part of the user profile.

I had a similar issue with shares becoming unavailable - even administrator would get access denied. No problem on desktops and only appeared to affect laptops. After days of head scratching checking DNS etc etc it turns out the offline file store was becoming corrupt, running fixit50561 on the local machine fixed the issue.

browsing with servername\sharename wouldn't work but with IP\sharename or FQDN\sharename would. Because the FQDN and IP hadn't been used before, offline files hadn't created the offline store.

It maybe something similar for you.
