Set flat 20GB (or a tad above what they're currently at if higher, and everytime they delete stuff move it down to keep towards 20GB) Not had a single person comment on it, so obviously it's lots of old rubbish being stored haha Steve

Boredguy Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 We limit staff to 5Gb as we only have limited storage capacity on the servers (no SANS) For most of them it's not an issue... there are a few staff that keep everything they have ever produced + copies of kids files in their area that are at the limit, but they just need to do some housekeeping the same as they should on their home computer.

vizubeat Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 8GB for staff, plus whatever they need in the Staff drive. Just 250MB for students! Maybe set their quota to 125% of the average disk usage, a bit more than what they're using for those that are above this limit and ask them to have a tidy up?

I've just had a lookie see in some large folders and found a folder full of films! 20GB... so needless to say I have removed THAT from the server. If they want them they can give me a flash drive for them to go on. Maybe make a list of shame and pin it in the staffroom? A bit of a nasty way of doing it. I'm going to suggest I sit down with one member and go through her files to see what we can delete because she has a lot of duplicate stuff. Might be worth spending a bit of time with certain staff members and going through their home drives. Will be worth the effort in the end!

Depends you can put soft limits on which bitch/message but don't block, or hard which we use that stops them saving. End of day, no difference to them filling space up 100% and not saving You're just spreading the space fairly. Manage what they got and it's not a problem, especially with dedup now, copies aren't issues as much Steve

And it's usually ones they've ripped off of DVDs! I usually make a point of the illegality and then delete them. To be fair some staff just have loads of powerpoints and documents that they use for work so I don't mind increasing the space for those users. 1

I was trying to get quotas put in place for years and finally the student with 110GB used in their home folder finally convinced the powers that be. I've never seen such a comprehensive collection of anime in my life, and doubt I ever will again. 1
