fiza Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 We have an external 2TB hard drive which has suddenly stopped working. Plug it in and you either get "You need to format the disk in drive E before you can use it", "E:\is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect" If you try to chkdsk you get "The disk check could not be performed because windows can't access the disk" As usual it has lots of important information on it which the user didn't back up elsewhere! Any ideas?

Oaktech Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 The only thing I've come across that'll deal with this in a timely fashion is a program called reclaime. Dealt with a corrupt raid from a 2tb WD mybook in about 48 hours, got the vast majority of the data off. 2
Joanne Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I once booted up with an ubuntu disc, then plugged in the hard drive with a SATA-USB cable and got data off that way. Linux didn't see it as corrupt for some reason. That was a WD MyWorld book or whatever they were called! Can't believe the relief when I got all the stuff off mainly because my RAID'ed TeraStation decided to have 2 HDD fail at the EXACT SAME TIME so the backup and the original both fell. No worries though... got them both working in the end! 1

I was about to mention this as do remember this being mentioned a few times and hearing a lot of good feedback about this. Also was going to say testdisk / photo rec as well which is by cgsecurity ( although this has been mentioned already ) lol So only thing I can say is to buy a new hard drive - that would fix the corrupted one or replace it lol

As @Oaktech mentioned previously I think Reclaime is aprox £50 give or take a bit , so not overly expensive for data recovery and works very well ReclaiMe File Recovery Software

bald_pig Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 +2 for testdisk, recovered everything from a teachers 1TB drive with this this week! It can be a bit fiddly though, so be careful and take your time! @difinity, a lot of external drives I've come across recently are USB native, not SATA with a converter board
fiza Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Well Photorec has recovered as much as its going to recover, around 13,000 files. I have given the files and the hard drive back to the user to sort through. thanks for all the suggestions. 1
