hardtailstar Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Hi all, I am after a laptop to replace my aging laptop and possibly computer all together. Ideally it'll be windows based but open to Chromebooks as all my stuff is in Google. I will need it to play DVDs and connect to projector via hdmi or vga as I use it for presentations/dvds, hence being windows based. other than that I am open to suggestions. Ive looked at the Dell XPS range. Should I wait till some laptops start having windows 10? (Ive played with the preview and like it) So any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I want it to last a few years, My current one ive had for nearly 5 years and its starting to slowly fall apart. Id be using it for websurfing, document creation, presentations, watching dvds, streaming films etc. If it was to replace my computer then I would need it for photo editing and mild gaming.
abillybob Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 The new Razer Blade is a nice bit of kit if you're looking for a desktop replacement. Alienware's new 15" laptop or 17" are great machines plus they now have an ability to add a desktop GPU so you can always upgrade that and use it like you would a desktop when at home? You can normally pick these up from the £1000 mark as long as you go to a re-seller (don't buy direct it's very expensive) normally I go to eBay re-sellers and despite what anyone says I've never had a problem. Arreks Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Replace the computer too, sell some of the better parts on eBay to recoup some funds to put into the laptop. Razer Blade's are very pretty, but MSI do a nice range of beasts for around 1000 too. 1

HP ProBook 450 G2 Laptop - Laptops at ebuyer Good spec, made of metal and with good support as it's a business laptop. If you are looking at more of a specialist gaming laptop, I'd go with @abillybob 's suggestion of an Alienware. 1

Decent CPU and graphics card. Also gives two storage slots so plenty of room for content, making ditching your desktop easier. 1

rich_tech Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 I am in a similar position with a house move on the cards, I won't have room to have a man cave really so I am thinking of getting a decent high end laptop or even the high end 15" macbook pro (that shows I am mellowing to even be considering one these days) I only really play wow and even that's on a decline at the moment, as there isn't a mass of stuff to do in game if your a casual from my perspective and alts arent exciting me.

I think they do something similar like alienware graphics amplifier that does the same thing but for MSI laptops instead. Linus Tech Tips on youtube did CES coverage on this and it would make a very good watch if you're in the market for a gaming PC. Alienware does come number 1 though as per normal. 1

We have half a dozen of this model in the office and I'm a little bit in love with how well built they are: Lenovo ThinkPad E540 20C6 - 15.6" - Core i3 4000M - Win7 Pro 64-bit / Win8.1 Pro - 4GB - 500GB (20C600JDUK) - dabs.com Stick a 256GB SSD in and you're good to go; if the cashback comes through (and there's no reason it wouldn't), you won't have spent much more than £400, and you'll have a laptop that restarts so fast you'll wonder if you actually restarted it or just clicked log out by mistake*. *I have done this at least half a dozen times today whilst updating laptops. 1
