Wubbalubbadub Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Morning all, I'm sure most people have there own Technical Wiki? To document IP address's and printer locations and server warranties ect. I'm just curios what people might use? I am looking to see if I can find a cloud based one. Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on this? Any recommendations? Matt
hardtailstar Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I just use Excel and Word. Then its easy to export out for Asset register,
LiamH Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 We used our helpdesk software for this, spiceworks had it, and at my current place they use sysaid. I also have notes saved in word/excel/onenote and evernote. Might be a project to consolidate that all.
gshaw Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I use SharePoint for our Wiki, works well and allows "organic" growth of documentation as I feel the need to expand on certain areas. For IPs etc. it's a mix of Excel and our helpdesk software
TechMonkey Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I currently have word and excel sheets but I have set up MediaWiki to start logging a new network build. It has info boxes setup to show important info and hoping to log changes or adjustments as we go. I started categories for things like Physical Hardware, Servers, Hosts, etc so I can filter. Not been used in anger yet, still in development.
steve Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 A wiki (Twiki) for documentation, config, processes, etc. and an excel spreadsheet for inventory covering the basics of PCs, servers, etc.

unixman_again Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 At the mo we use Mediawiki but it's all a bit of a mess. All of the documentation is correct but it isn't well organised. We are starting again, with a new wiki using Docuwiki. We've developed a really sensible set of sections and sub-sections and our junior techie is slowly converting all of the info from the old to the new.
Sylv3r Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 We also used to use Mediawiki but over the last couple of months have moved everything over to OneNote. Working really well and able to access it on devices using the OneNote app, web, PC or MAC.

webman Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 At the school I used to work in, I set up DokuWiki (with LDAP integration) for documentation. It had a lot of things: cabs, switches, IPs, printers, projectors etc; and "knowledgebase" type articles for the team - like how to clean projectors, workarounds for known issues, how to package up and roll out certain things. The problem was keeping it updated. We were all so busy doing our actual jobs that it rarely left time to keep everything in there up to date.
chris_uk Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Check out Confluence - https://confluence.atlassian.com Well worth the small amount of money it costs.
jtoland Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Are you developing this in a commercial capacity? Ben Hi Ben at this moment we are building the system for use in the 2 schools i work at, we are wanting other schools to try it out and we do have a goal at making it into commercial product
