abillybob Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Since Christmas I signed up for Amazon Prime's free trial so that I could get all my parcels delivered next day at no extra charge, it was also a nice addition they used better couriers such as UPS and Parcelforce rather than companies like Yodel. I have also seen that you can rent books from the site using Prime membership for free and you can stream Television and films of which I've been doing and haven't had any problems. In fact streaming 1080p video from the site was very smooth and a lovely experience on my Smart TV. Is the £79 per year worth it? Has anybody signed up for it before and wish they hadn't? I'm near the end of my free trial so I'm deciding on whether or not to keep the membership. Cheers
Joanne Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 If you get more than 10 deliveries a year then it has paid for itself. If you subscribe to netflix and whatnot, you could cancel that and use amazon prime instead. I don't use amazon enough for it to be worth while for me.
featured_spectre Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 We signed up here, and its been more than worth it. Christmas deliveries alone were a godsend. My mrs and I are both on my account (as a household member she gets that bonus), and we both stream the daylights from their service. I more than made up for the fact that it cost £79 by ordering a boat load of items which next day delivery on them all would have cost more than the £79.
CHR1S Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I think I'm on my 5th "free trial" month now. I just cancel in the 30 days and wait until I'm offered it for free again, usually a month or a little more later.

Only had 2 or 3 things not appear the next day, and Amazon refunded them quickly. As Joanne says, if you order from Amazon a lot then it pays for it's self. This year we done about 80% of our Christmas shopping using Amazon Prime

Didn't use the streaming immediately, but do now, since we got rid of sky, we now use a combination of amazon & nowTV. Free sunday delivery is good too - ordered a DVD friday evening, had it sunday morning.

I'm a little annoyed about all these streaming services because it seems that for example Instant Prime has The Walking Dead and various exclusives that I like to watch where as Netflix has Breaking Bad and other TV Shows I like to watch. Why in the UK we can't just have 1 streaming service that does everything is beyond me. The obvious choice for streaming in the US is Netflix because it pretty much has the monopoly when it comes to content and is very cheap at only $7.99 a month.

Its a shame amazon bill it yearly I wouldn't mind prime for deliveries and streaming as a free bonus but I just don't wont to fork out for a year in 1 go

However Netflix recently hardcoded Google's DNS servers into their Android app so it could be a lie. www.engadget.com/2015/01/03/netflix-clamps-down-on-vpns/ Netflix tells us that there's been "no change" in the way it handles VPNs, so you shouldn't have to worry about the company getting tough any time soon. With that said, these blocking errors started showing up in the past few weeks, so it's not clear what would have prompted them. RichCowell Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I've had it for about 9 months now, the TV service is much the same as the others, with the advantage of being able to buy what you can't watch for free in the same service... I've got Netflix too, but pretty bored with that so won't be carrying on with it for too much longer... I've added a couple of family members (well, one family member and one other) to the discount for the next day deliveries, and they're enjoying that too... The only downside is the up-front payment, it's a bit steep... they do an offer for UK College & Uni Students to get it half price, which is nice, for them lol... I'll be renewing mine in March as I've been pretty happy with everything overall...

I think they should all offer the same content, then it's down to their quality of service / customer service / usability & availability of apps etc. I think it should be the same with mobile networks too - they should all use all the same towers etc. then it's just the service/prices etc. that people will decide on... but I won't go on about that!

For info, the DNSes listed here work fine (so far so good) and are free. My Chromecast is on Netflix UK (currently watching The Shield) and my WD TV Live is configured for Netflix US (for Mad Men and US-only films). Ace. AntJayC Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I got Amazon Prime as I was a love film customer I think overall the streaming services have improved and the range of programs and films available. I still get my dvds delivered also but use my Prime account alot to watch films and the shows I like.
