To in-place upgrade from 2008 to 2012 or to not ??

Test it, let me know how it goes! I've got a couple of servers that could benefit from the upgrade, but not from me borking them!

I'd recommend a fresh new install of 2012r2, and then transfer it.

 

Lot's of hassle, but may save a lot of grief in future.

I think the general rule of thumb is to do a fresh install unless it really can't be avoided.

 

Fresh installs just are a much cleaner installation and less likely to inherit problems.

Also depends if your 2008 server is 32 bit or 64 bit (or is it 2008 R2 which is 64 bit only). If your existing server is 32 bit (which would be odd for a MIS server admittedly) then you can't in-place upgrade. I'd recommend a fresh install, whichever.

We did an in place upgrade on our Domain Controllers from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2 without removing the AD roles and all but 1 DC worked without any issues (and I believe a power cut mid upgrade caused the only issue)

I did an inplace upgrade of 2008 to 2012 with my MIS server and it worked well and fixed many nagging issues I was experiencing. I did use VMWare however and tested it on a snapshot first.

I did an in place upgrade of 2008r2 to 2012r2. Server is AD DC/DHCP/DNS/file and print server. It went fine and dandy! Not a SIMS server though, not sure if would make a difference.

I did a test upgrade and it killed the server. Would not even boot.
