Another photo from my trip up north. I explored Linlithgow for one day and visited Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Really fascinating and rich history behind it. You also don't realise the scale of it until you go into the courtyard and look inside at the interior rooms!

I had the opportunity to have a trip in a friend's light aircraft at the weekend. Here's a few of the shots of Silverstone, Woburn, Bedford, Grafham Water and Towcester racecourse.. (they need some work to tidy them up a bit).

I have been watching 3 maybe 4 Barn Owls hunting in the field next to us.

 

These are from last night.

Only the one visitor last night, it's ringed and according to my nextdoor neighbour (a keen birder)

It was ringed in Skipton some 72 miles away from us.

I have seen this Owl 2 or 3 times now.

How do they know that? I know the rings have ID numbers on them, so did he get a good look with a long lens or is there some other way you can scan them?

Ah, I'd assumed the codes were more complex but I suppose if you can cross-reference it against the type of bird it is on, then two digits and a colour (and location, I suppose) is probably enough.

I know nothing about birders or ringers if it moves I may just point my camera and as this is one of maybe 4 that are hunting in the field next to our house its an opportunity to practice on especially in low light.

 

These were shot with a Canon R5 RF100-500+1.4x converter at about 700mm, iso 10000 and 6400, ran them through DXO to remove the noise and sharpened a bit in Lightroom and cropped about 60%.

Went for my first 'proper' walk since my operations last year. I chose Roeburndale near Wray (close to Lancaster) as it wasn't too long, but had a lot of gradient.
It's a SSSI site and had a healthy population of Pied Flycatchers (which I didn't see a single one this time) and few human visitors. We did hear cuckoos though, which is always nice.
The first pic is from the approach, the valley it is located in is so steep, the land essentially drops off and you can't see it until you are on the edge. You can see the small building in the centre, and this marks the point where you go down a snaking path to the bottom. And you get a great vie of Pen-Y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside mountains (the real three peaks) from the start.

It was a great walk and the Roeburndale valley is very sheltered, so almost no wind down there this weekend  

 

The woods were also full of bluebells, which made for a very nice experience. Woodland walks like this are not very common here in Lancashire.

I went down to Amesbury for an army reunion last weekend and whilst there decided to take a look at the site of Bluestonehenge. This is right on the banks of the river Avon and was the point neolithic visitors to Stonehenge would arrive by boat at the start of the Avenue (ritual path to Stonehenge).
It was discovered in 2008 as part of the Stonehenge Riverside Project. There was a path to it, but I suspect was on private land due to garden tables and chairs being present, so I took a couple of snaps and left!
It was a very pretty location.

Went to the Lytham 1940's weekend on Saturday. Scorching heat and a massive turnout. Not fun on the bus back as they were all rammed and with temps still in the mid-20's.Not fun!
Still, the mock battle on Lytham Green was great fun. Lots of pyro and blanks being let loose  
I, got to speak to the owners of these two German Sd.kfz 222 armoured cars and was surprised to find out that they had made them from scratch!

The one in the foreground was built from a Land Rover 110 chassis and the one at the back from a Land Rover Discovery II. I was amazed the one based on the Discovery made it around the arena (I have stories of the utter horror of owning a Discovery II).
Still, they were very well built and a credit to those involved.

Not a terribly good pic, but the subject is massive.  The pod must have numbered over 30 which surprised the crew of the boat.

Fixed that for you.  An utter PITA if I need to get to town during "the season".
