So, after the last couple of days of running around to staff laptops to find out that the reason why software x hasn't installed is because the staff member NEVER TURNS OFF THEIR LAPTOP or (in a couple of cases turns it on at home then brings it in), does anyone have an easy-to-follow chart/pictorial thing to explain why it is important for them to turn off their laptops and turn them on again in school for software installations/updates and other reasons?

If there's one that explains why opening 15 Word docs and 8 Smart Notebook files at the same time will affect their machine's performance and another explaining why a sticker with their logon, email and SIMS credentials stuck to their laptop is a bad idea, that would be a bonus!

Banned at work, but after checking on phone: if only!

TBF, I think some of the staff don't know that software and updates are sometimes installed from the server on switch-on. They don't stand looking at their screens while the laptops boot so they might not even notice.

I think you need to remember that what is obvious to us is absolutely not to them.

can you 'break' something between remote access and school so that to reset the functionality you have to restart?

Our seamless VPN is almost seamless because of the need to log off at school on the domain log in and then re log in at home to reset the proxy settings.

Ask them if they put a post-it note on their bank card with the pin number and mothers maiden name/place of birth ect written on it.

Cant fix stupid with laminated notices!

For the updates, I like Dos_Box's suggestion, we also had a week every term where people brought in laptop's to us to run updates/check everything. The mention that we were doing a survey of them for potential upgrades got the participation up..

That's why i was hoping for a pictorial representation. Though in the most recent case all the staff were told that the software would update when the computer was turned on. Unfortunately many of them think that means "awoken from sleep". I blame the telly. They NEVER turn off laptops on the telly. I did istitute an "off on lid close policy, but they can't be bothered to even do that.

Alas, nothing like that.

Tempting...

I wish I had that much influence! I have a hard time getting laptops back that "take an hour to start up" let alone ones that don't have problems!
