talksr Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Hi there, Have been using HP kit for years, never had any serious problems. Along side a ML350 G6 and ML360 G5, I have an X1600 G2 (this is a storage server, like a NAS but with Storage Server 2008 installed). I am growing increasingly concerned at the number of hard drives this unit seems to be going through. In the 2-3 years we have owned the server from new, we have now got up to our 7th hard drive replacement. Server is under warranty, so although it doesn't cost us anything, I am not happy that this keeps on happening. The server is not that heavily used. Here are a few of the technical details: Its running Storage Server 2008 R2. It has a 5.5tb Raid 6 ADG. The hard drives are a mix of 1tb and 2tb Dual Port 7.2k SAS MDL drives. So far the 2tb's have not failed, just the 1tbs. The server has 10tb's worth of hard drives installed into it. HP seem very uninterested and simply replace the drives under warranty giving no explanation for the failures. I requested they address the issue, and as a consequence we investigated if maybe the server was getting too hot, but apparently the logs suggested everything was ok. Has anyone else had any bother and if so what can I do?!
blu4 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Where do you keep the array and the server? In a room with AC and low humidity?
spacebar Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) Is it in a room with air-con? Might sound like a stupid question but lots of school servers are not. Are there any servers above or below it? Is there any reason why the rack would be vibrating? When large traffic goes past etc. Depending on your location. Edited October 7, 2014 by spacebar
localzuk Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 It could simply be something like a bad batch of hard drives. Have any of the replacement drives been replaced?
talksr Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) Whats the make(s) of the drives? They are HP MB1000BAWJP 461134-003 Replacement drives which then failed, have also been replaced with replacement drives. Edited October 7, 2014 by talksr

newpersn Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Have tired updating firmware on the raid controller? (or Bios) (we had this on our mail server. Used to fail drives for no reason. Updated controller and no problems)
pete Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Are the 2TB drives on a different controller to the 1TB drives? Or just another port on the same controller?
talksr Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 Have tired updating firmware on the raid controller? (or Bios) (we had this on our mail server. Used to fail drives for no reason. Updated controller and no problems) I believe we did this last time, but I will ask them to check if we have the correct firmware now. - - - Updated - - - Are the 2TB drives on a different controller to the 1TB drives? Or just another port on the same controller? The 2's are on the same controller just in different ports. They are all part of the same raid.
john Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Well worth getting the latest firmware pack on the box, ensuring the drivers are done as that can be a separate FW tool for HP as we have had some 1TB drives that are prone to "dying" yet new FW brought them all back to life and no issues since.
SYNACK Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 As above firmware, may also be worth asking them to replace the drive backplane as these can start failing out and killing drives over time.
Dickens Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Slightly different issue, but same area - we've got (amongst other things) an HP DL320e which has a 1tb OS drive and 3 3tb Data drives running DPM. From day one it was a bit of a nightmare, most times it would boot OK, but on the odd occasion the raid array controller would fail to post citing drive faults. A reboot and it would boot fine, until one day it just kept doing it. HP engineer came and replaced the drive backplane and enclosures and since then it's been as good as gold - certainly worth asking the question. BTW: Why do the Gen 8 HP servers take sooooooooo long to boot - what precisely are "Early Processor initialisation" and "Thermal Calibration" - just start !!!
SYNACK Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 BTW: Why do the Gen 8 HP servers take sooooooooo long to boot - what precisely are "Early Processor initialisation" and "Thermal Calibration" - just start !!! Server EFI, its the same reason you can schedule a holiday each time you need to reboot a current gen IBM server as it will take that looooong to POST.
m25man Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Not the first time they have had drive firmware issues. Google this.... Document ID: c03342857

Oaktech Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Has the drive power supply been tested? It's possible that you have a dodgy power rail that could be cooking drives?

Sea of Sensorzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 3D, the Gen 9s probably take even longer as it got worse between Gen 7 and 8
