I watched A Quiet Place last night as I will be going to see the second movie in the cinema. Embarrassingly I spent about a minute at the start of the movie trying to work out why the sound wasn't working....

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (Netflix)

 

OK, I wasn't expecting much from this, but it turned out to be quite amusing. Only worth a look if you've enjoyed most of Kevin Smith's previous work, though.

Went to the actual cinema to watch A Quiet Place Part 2. Gods, I've missed it. (I did keep my mask on the entire time, even if no other bugger did, just because I can't relax around strangers indoors yet without it...).

 

Damn near as good as the first movie, though it's lost the tighter focus and (obviously) some of the surprise of the setting. Cillian Murphy is fantastic, obvs, and the sound design remains excellent--that is, the bits of it I could hear over someone else in the screen constantly stirring their popcorn for the entire first half of the movie. Seriously, of all the movies to do that in! Well worth going and seeing it in a proper theatre, though, to really get the impact of the silence and the tension it creates.

 

(If you're someone who can't stand tension in movies, though, like my wife, this is the worst possible film series for you. The entire run-time is an exercise in constant tension.)

Six Midnights to Midnight (Sky Movies)

 

 

Just before the outbreak of WW2 a teacher discovers some disturbing facts about his new post.

 

Fairly decent thriller, though Eddie Izzard is a little too long in the tooth to be playing a Richard Hannay type action man. Worth a look if you have access to Sky Movies, but not one to seek out at all costs. The "trues story" it is based on is that the school actually existed (though run by Germans).

The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard That mythical place called "The Cinema"

 

Entertaining sequel gives Salma Hayek much more to do (and swear at). Mme LeMarchand and I both enjoyed it, but probably not one to rush to the cinema to see - though there were more there than we expected.

 

Quite a nice trailer for Fast 9 with Vin growling the pleasures of the cinema experience before the main feature.

 

Got tickets for Monster Hunter on Saturday. We were first to book...

Bet Rebecca Front never thought she'd be in a Hollywood action movie. Let alone one where she gets beaten up by Salma Hayek.

Monster Hunter (Cinema)

 

 

Milla Jovovich and her company of redshirts are transported to a desert(?) world where monsters rule. She must team up with a stranded local to try to escape.

 

Not played the game/s, so no idea how faithful it is (probably not) but this sort of film isn't really about story. It succeeds fairly well at what it sets out to do but I'd rather have had time spent on explaining the world rather than the second "pre-team up" fight between the leads. Biggest disappointment was that a lot of the CGI still took place in the dark/rain although a fair chunk of it took place in the light, which was the film's USP.

 

If this sort of thing is up your alley, worth a look when it's on something you have a sub for - but not one to rush out to see.

Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk and written by the guy what wrote John Wick. Out in cinemas right now.

 

Absolutely brilliant. So it's basically Taken again--suburban dad suddenly unleashes his Particular Set of Skills to save the day and be the hero again, all the middle-aged men in the audience aren't irrelevant or past it, etc. etc.--except it is at once taking the absolute wossit out of Taken whilst taking itself entirely seriously and surpassing Taken in the process. It takes the premise to its absurd extremes--and so instead of Manly and Impressive Liam Neeson, you have the bumbling and milquetoast Bob Odenkirk in the role (who is amazing, don't get me wrong). Instead of the inciting incident being the kidnapping of his daughter, in this case it's a robbery that leads, straight-faced, to the line, "Give me the goddamn kitty-cat bracelet!"

 

It is as entertaining an action film as I've seen since, well, the John Wick films, though it's a different beast to them. The fight sequences are brutal and well-choreographed and have some great physical comedy to them--my wife described the climactic sequence as "like Home Alone for adults". And best of all, it knows exactly what it is, and keeps itself to a tight 90 minutes runtime--no bloated self-importance here.

 

Wonderful stuff.

We watched a couple of movies last night.

 

Stand By Me - 1986

 

Now a classic. Some parts reminded me of my childhood, enjoying the outdoors doing random stuff with the local kids.

 

 

Nobody - 2021

 

I enjoyed the movie. Although I thought the first 40 minutes or so seemed weaker than the rest. I seem to like every character than Bob Odenkirk plays

I thought the Hive Mind had ruled it was a racist POS? I wonder is Spielberg is reshooting some of West Side Story as we speak...The energy and dancing in the trailer looked good but the music just didn't do it for me.

 

The ladies of the house were away this weekend, so I went for a couple that wouldn't interest them (both on Netflix).

 

Escape Room. So-so SAW-alike that doesn't really stand up to scrutiny.

 

Army of the Dead. I quite enjoyed this, though parts didn't make sense. Didn't really feel like a Zack Snyder film, though. Not too much slo-mo and he's realised that there is this thing called daylight.

By now, you know if you like these films or not. If you don't, this one won't sway you. If you do, it's maybe not the best of them, but still chock full of OTT fight scenes and scenes of vehicular carnage. I enjoyed it!
