I enjoyed Endgame but agree that one character's trauma was played for too many laughs I'm sure I missed a lot though and will have to go and see it again I think.

Not to give away anything, but that event at the end when the camera went to each person - there was a young man standing on his own - who was he?

Endgame, in a minority thought it was good but not outstanding. Way too long, focused too much on one stupid Character and one cardboard one. The Dark Knight is still king to me

Really enjoyed it. Surprised by the first 30 minutes or so being what they were, but in a good way.

 

Unfortunately it's very hard to talk about what was good/bad without venturing into spoiler territory. Even saying what impressed me most would spoil things (and it wasn't a plot point). Can't wait to see where the MCU goes after this.

Just got back from seeing Avengers: Endgame with the kids.

Wow! Loved it, apart from the first half hour/40 mins which did seem a bit slow and a couple of of things really did annoy me, but didn't detract from the movie as a whole.

Anyway, I think we shall give it until Sunday evening before allowing spoilers to be posted in the Endgame thread as there is a lot to discuss I think.

Decent movie, I preferred Infinity War though, it was a bit too cheesy in places and the ending fell a bit flat I felt.

Watched "What we do in the shadows" this weekend. Very quirky, a bit strange but also funny I thought. I liked it overall.

 

Have also seen that there is now a tv show spinoff (not with the NZ cast but in America this time).

I think the TV show may be slightly better - it's moved me to laugh out loud a couple of times, which I didn't during the film.

 

I saw: The Equalizer 2

 

Denzel still manages to convince as the street level avenger, but the film is ponderously paced. Nowhere near as fun as the first, and while it has its moments, I'm glad I didn't bother with this at the cinema.

The First Purge

 

it was ok - started off a bit slow and boring, but got better as it turned into a dumb action film I was hoping for more of an origins tale of how The Purge started, but it didn't really explain much more than had been said in the other three films.

Watched the Bundy/Effron film at the weekend. Not sure what it was meant to say about the guy... almost seemed like he was too nice to be a killer which I suppose was the point. Very strange film.

Tolkien

 

It's Look Hoult's Tolkien as Nicholas Hoult plays the LotR author in an earnest biopic.

 

The film concentrates on his relationships with his school chums and wife, starting with him in The Somme and flashing back to his rural childhood and then chronologically through major events up to when he finally starts work on The Hobbit.

 

Worth a look if you're interested, but I'd say wait until home/VoD release.

The Avengers

 

The 1998 one based on the TV show.

 

Not a masterpiece, but I think it has a bit of an unfair reputation. Admittedly, I've read about the original show than actually seen much of it - so while it seemed very "Avengers-y" to me, I will concede that to someone who's actually watched more of the show it might seem like a poor pastiche. Ralph Fiennes totally lacks Patrick McNee's sparkle, but Uma Thurman isn't too bad and her accent is surprisingly good.

 

A bit unfair that it put the brakes on the director's career when it seems that the released version was severely cut at the insistence of the studio.

I have to say, I enjoyed it and if you work in the City in London like @Domino you'll be going to work wondering where they all are as lots of it was shot in that area then heavily CGI'd.

Beyond Skyline

 

 

Belated "sequel" to 2010's Skyline, this takes place at around the same time in the invasion and carries on a bit past its ending. It also turns out to be much more of a sequel than the trailer lets on. It's less of a thriller than the original, and more of an action/kaiju film with a bit of martial arts thrown in for good measure. Dumb fun, but not a "must see".

The Wandering Earth

 

 

After it's discovered that the sun is going to expand and destroy life on earth, it is decided to move as much of the population underground as possible and Space:1999 the planet, using it as a spacecraft to reach another solar system. Unfortunately as the planet nears Jupiter to use its gravity well to slingshot it out of our system, it is discovered that a gravity spike spells catastrophe for the mission, and humanity.

 

Spectacular, and pedal to the metal for most of its running time, but the film felt a bit off to me.The Netflix English dub is poorly acted, which didn't help, and I always find the humour in Chinese films a bit odd anyway, but I didn't really care too much about the characters. Admittedly, I was very tired. The author of the story it's based on is well-regarded, so maybe something got lost in translation.

Sorry to Bother You

 

It's... weird. Really weird. Has a lot to say about racism and capitalism, though, so might be your bag! It's got some great performances in.

 

But oh man it goes to some strange places.

Alien: Covenant

 

This feels like an attempt to fuse the original's "blue collar stiffs in space" with Ridley Scott's more philosophical turn in "Prometheus". Unfortunately it doesn't really work. It looks good, but what i wanted to see in the sequel to "Prometheus" got Alien 3'd. Only for dedicated Alien fans; I'm glad I didn't pay to see this!
