Why is it that Misco and BTBusiness Direct still flog mainly 4GB machines and anything over 4GB costs loads more? I know Windows is not hogging more RAM with every iteration anymore but I like to keep 30 tabs open at once and hate the slowdown when windows has to page memory to a HDD.

I prefer to buy big name desktops not custom builds. Perhaps I should look again at them.

Any reason you prefer big name to custom builds? We found that our custom builds are a lot cheaper do allow you to change the small components such as ram installed

Dell recently sold me some very nice i7 based desktops with 8GB of RAM and SSD's for a very reasonable price that no one else could get anywhere near.

I have seen heavily modded Skyrim take 3.2GB or RAM by itself. Europa Universalis is also poorly written, and heavily modded willl east over 3GB.

And as for Sid Meier's Civilization, I've seen that hog so much RAM that I have had to restart my computer!

Even a gamer who loves keeping browsers open will honestly not really need more than 4GB in practice.

If only that were true. :)

Lots of games are starting to need more than 4GB RAM. Watchdogs is one that comes to mind.

My EduGeek rig has 32GB of RAM and my chrome craziness ends up taking up 12GB of RAM (thats the highest I think I have had it) as I leave tabs/windows open with certain tasks on them.

I'm a technician and my workstation has 16GB. Everyone in the team got an upgrade to 8GB from the standard 4GB in this machine, and I added another 8 myself. I think it makes a difference with the number of applications I have running at once.

Skyrim usually has issues with Mods because not everyone rights them correctly.

To be fair, Watchdogs is very Poorly optimised.

On Topic:

I'd suggest a custom build. It's like lego and so much cheaper

I have 16GB in my gaming rig, I tend to have iTunes open playing Music, TeamSpeak going, Edugeek open, Gmail, Work Email, Various Windows 8 Apps, A game of some sort and normally a task running in the background such as an installation, CD/DVD Burning, Video Converter, Music Converter.

That's general use for me, plus with Windows 8 I can even sometimes be playing a game on the right of my screen and be using XBMC to watch Live TV or have TV Shows playing at the same time.

Though I have only ever hit around 9GB Maximum!

For laptops custom builds are less popular. Need to buy 10-15 teacher laptops and want to future proof them as much a possible without breaking the budget.

I swallow the marketing bumph? I'm vain? More aesthetically pleasing? Better Thermal flow therefore longer life (myth?)?

I have previously bought 60 Lenovo desktops's and added more RAM myself before. Pretty laborious and had to remove RAM from half of them to avoid mixing brands of RAM.

Was just making the comment not really looking for solutions. Would have thought that 8GB is the minimum these days even just to future proof my investment. Can't see a 4GB machine lasting 5 yrs without being upgraded.

I recommend just buying extra RAM and installing it yourself. Far cheaper than trying to specify it in the original purchase. 4GB is the "standard" amount now for business machines. You've got more chance of finding home PCs with 8GB in my experience too.

RAM usage is very much down to the individual user. I'm sat here not doing a lot and I'm using 5GB of my 16GB available. If I fire up my MSI repackaging VM, it'll go up by another 4GB, or if I run some other bits and pieces it'll go up further. 4GB is not really enough for me any more.

4GB is also not really enough for new games (or some old games, looking at you heavily modded Minecraft).

I reckon more PCs would come with 8GB RAM as standard if DDR3 still cost the same as it did at the end of 2011 (~£12 for 4GB).

Probably because (for box shifters like BT Business & Misco) the cost difference between the 4GB version and an 8GB version of the same machine bears little resemblance to the actual price of the RAM. They'd rather shift 4GB machines and some competitively priced RAM upgrades than have a bunch of overpriced 8GB machines mouldering on the shelves.

Why not just order and install a couple of extra DIMMs yourself?

+1 You can buy an additional 4Gb RAM for around £35. If you go to somewhere like crucial they'll guarantee compatibility as well if you enter your system model/spec.
