Samsung Galaxy S5 vs iPhone 6

Was waiting to see what the iPhone 6 Plus was like, but currently tempted by the LG G3 or Oppo Find 7. Think it'll be the LG G3 if I can find a 32gb version in the UK . Not a huge fan of Samsung phone having lived with my S4 for 18 months - love Android, but not the phone unfortunately!

I'm tempted by the LG G3 personally, and I'm a big HTC fanboy too (my last 4 phones have been HTC). Hate the Samsung phones I've used - they always feel cheap in my view.

 

However, if Lenovo start selling their Vibe Z2 Pro in the UK on contract with whoever, I'd be looking at that...

I recently got an S5 and love it, i use my phone quite a lot at work and regularly get home with >50% battery and have clocked over 7 hours screen on time just with the stock Samsung firmware on a full charge.

Im looking at going for the next Nexus phone that comes out.

Definitely the S5 or other decent Android. I've had an S3 for a couple of years now, it was getting a bit slow recently so I installed CyanogenMod using the installer, it was very straight forward and now its as fast as when it was new.

iPhone 6 all the way for me. I've had so many friends who have had issues with the top Android manufacturers, Samsung, HTC, Sony and Motorola and none of the support comes close to that offered by Apple. If you have a problem with an iPhone, you book a Genius Bar appointment and your phone is fixed/replaced usually the very same day, if not within a couple of hours. I had a Sony Xperia Z1 & 2 go faulty for 2 separate friends and both were without a phone for a whole month before it came back from repair. Another friend's Moto G (2nd Gen LTE) went faulty and he was without a phone for 2 weeks. Same case with a Galaxy S4. In a world where people need their phones practically all the time, and for the cost that is paid for the phone, that kind of support just isn't acceptable.

 

If you really wanted to go down the Android route, I wouldn't look any further than the Moto G or the Moto X if you wanted a more feature filled option.

 

However, my personal preference would definitely be the iPhone as I much prefer iOS over Android.

Both the HTC One and the current and previous lines of iPhone have aluminium backs and glass fronts. I don't understand why one would be any more fragile than the other.

 

FWIW I've seen equal amounts of shattered screens on phones that our kids are carrying around from all brands.

The iphone glass goes completely from edge to edge - meaning a drop can shatter the glass if it lands on an angle on the front edge. The HTC glass doesn't go edge to edge, there is a plastic rounded bevel on the very edge so if it lands on that edge, it doesn't hit the glass itself.

I could not afford the M8 so went with the Nexus which is a fantastic phone and always gets the latest updates.

Not to use it effectively no, am saying to protect it so you don't have to worry about smashing the glass etc you buy a decent case and then if you do drop your phone ( regardless of make ie apple / samsung or whoever ) your phone will still be in tact , in one piece etc ( well more likely to be less damaged or not damaged at all ) in comparison to no protective case

@mac_shinobi - Price wise, it's a no brainer to go for the Moto G. The 2014 model currently comes in at £149.99 directly from Motorola, but is sure to come down in price once Tesco get it in stock. The specs are almost identical, except for the CPU, RAM and the 1080p display where the Nexus fairs better. However, the Moto G isn't exactly lagging far behind with a Quad Core CPU, 720p display and 1GB of RAM. The Nexus costs £299 for the 16GB and £339 for the 32GB with no expandable storage. Whereas the Moto G has only 8GB but comes with expandable storage at half the price. Also the Moto G is waterproof.

 

Personally, I think the performance isn't really going to be noticeable and so for half the price, the Moto G would be my choice here.

To actually answer OP's question, I would personally pick the Samsung - In my personal experience they're better built (still not great) than the iPhone in terms of durability, my opinion on the operating system side of things is that Android has more freedom.

The only true waterproof phone that I've come across is the Sony Xperia range. No other phone stands up to the rigours of a washing machine and lives to tell the tale!
