Ready for them to be out of my way.

Yep feel the same, just want to get started on the bigger projects so they can be finished in time for September. (As well as making it easier to relax on holiday knowing I got most of the work done)
Tall_Paul Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Daft question, but when you do guys actually take your holidays? We're changing next year to fixed days, but I've been told we can only take a week off during term time so we will have to take some of the summer off.

I'm wanted in all term, but I have loads of stuff that has to be done DURING THE HOLIDAY... Any term-time holiday will be refused and if stuff isn't done during holidays I'll get told off because it isn't done... So, technically, I'm not allowed a holiday.

So I do get 4 weeks of holiday but I can't afford to take it anyway beyond chilling at home only spending money on tofu and noodles or looking for summer work.

I should point out, I'm on a 52 week "book holidays whenever" contract... I'm still owed 4 weeks holiday for this year, and that runs out in September.

I was like that when I first moved to full time, then realised I need the time off and took it anyway. Got to do a bit of clever planning and stuff doesn't get in the way during hols. You are owed so many days holiday, you need to take them. Work is never complete as they say.

StevieM Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I'm term-time only +2 weeks, which I can do as and when. I tend to go in at least one day during each holiday and sometimes more. I'll be in and out over the summer, and also updating our school website at home. I've experienced many of the summer disruptions the OP mentions, but I still make sure I take time to enjoy my holiday.
caffrey Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I had too much to do last year and ended up with 13 days holiday not taken, I then subsequently found out that if I didn't take them I'd lose them and I did - so this year I've taken 12 days off regardless of how much work there is to do! (and I've got lot's to do...)

Contractors turning off the power to buildings without informing us knocking out internet and telephones across the site! Summer school in using computers etc so we can't down bits of the network or upgrade IT suites.

If you're entitled to them, just claim (truthfully or not) that you're suffering burnout and it's affecting your performance. Failing that, maybe a quiet talk with your Union? If you're entitled to your holidays, take 'em one way or another. Unless you can get paid extra for not taking them? That might be worth it. "Fine, I'm not taking any holidays, but you'll pay me extra for the 24 days I should've been allowed to take off!"? I'm Term Time+, right now. So I'm working until Friday evening, and then I'm off for the rest of the summer. I think it's 20 days I work (so basically 4 weeks, not including weekends?).. Or is it 15 days? I forget, actually.. To be honest, school could pull me in more than I'm contracted for and I wouldn't actually notice (or care) because I still get time off most of the time, which refreshes me for the next term. Even working straight through the 1-week half terms is refreshing enough with less staff and no kids in the building. I should probably find out what I'm on though.. Edited July 22, 2014 by Garacesh

I am the only ICT Tech / Network Manager here & I look after quite a substantial network in house - also I look after the audio / visual needs of the school including assemblies, event support etc. I can barely take a half day during term time let alone a full day without the requests going through the roof. Right now I'm in the position where I have to take pretty much all hallowe'en, Christmas, and half term in Feb off to bring my annual leave down to an acceptable level to carry over (7 days max) ... that's not touching my 10+ days in leiu at the mo I've accrued from working bank holidays etc. Thankfully I can carry those over, but then again the same problem will come around next year!

Are you happy with that? I know I wouldn't be! Time to grasp the nettle and go and speak to the Head\Principal. In my experience employers are rarely bothered about you working yourself to an early grave, but they will notice if things don't get done because you're understaffed.
