oquinn101 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 So guys and girls.. I seem to have a little issue with a student who has come in now for the 6th time this week about whenever she logs on all her shortcuts and documents all appear as .doc files. Deleting her profile off of our domain controller seems to temporarily fix the issue, but when she then re-logs in it seems to revert back to change it all again to .doc files... I think I'm going mental...
X-13 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Can you see when they were changed? It might give you an idea of what's going on.
Foresthippy Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Not sure about the documents, but this can happen to shortcuts if the .lnk file extension becomes associated with a program i.e MS word. I would have thought that deleting the profile would cure it though.
Oaktech Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Or you are picking up a corrupt profile from a machine? Have you searched the network for machines with an old and possibly corrupt version of the profile to delete?

oquinn101 Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 It appears correct everywhere else, it even changes the shortcuts on the start menu (only for her). If you check out the picture, that is what I can see when going to her documents via our NAS server.

DanHoughton Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Hi, If you ever get this issue again a quick fix can be found at: A Utility to Unassociate File Types in Windows 7 and Vista - The Winhelponline Blog We've had this a few times. The remove User's choice comes in handy! Dan 1
MatthewL Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Oh thats a useful tool, could of done with that last week.
DMcCoy Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I suspect it's a workflow issue. Some users insist on opening *everything* (documents, other programs etc) by opening word first then going to file > open....
peterp Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 We get this issue occasionally here. We havent been able to track down how it happens, but a delete of the user profile fixes the problem. The users don't have the ability to right click, or choose open-with, so it's not that causing it. Somehow the profile is getting corrupt.
