Hi Edugeekers & Geekettes,

If you had £500 to spend before the powers that be take your "toy" budget away what would you buy? Unfortunately it just needs to be relevant to an IT technician job role.

Set of decent tools including hex keys, spanners, soldering iron and the like- Decent storage bag for said tools.

Corporate "IT Support" clothing with hoody or fleece

We have new tools en-route with a fancy carry case, network tester is already en-route but an air-compressor might be very useful indeed! Good work!

Nope 100% serious about left over budget, we just brought ourselves new tablets and tools, we don't need work wear and training is already provided (along with any materials needed)

You're not going to get much of a backup solution for £500

Some new furniture? Some nice monitors? A fancy shamncy keyboard and mouse?

Disagree. Got quite a good solution coming for around that.

I just got ordered a new MacBook Pro :) I felt like since all the teachers are getting shiny shiny I'd quite like one also. This was because we had left over budget too, god knows how the amount we have purchased!

Backups are performed off site so no need to worry about that, This magical place is a University (I wont say which one though haha)

Funny you should mention ergoflex arms, we are currently in the process of having a new office made for us (with all new furniture) one of my (many) requests is a set of ergoflex arms so that'll be brought from a different budget. A new big monitor would be awesome but I think it'll need to be something the whole team can use.

How hard can it be to spend money on something justifiable! Ha!

I am shortly going to have to justify why we need an USB gender changer... I wish I lived in a world where I had a budget, let alone left over budget!!

I love my macbook pro, I have last years model but its still blisteringly fast!

Us techies need to be at least one step ahead of the shiny shiny teachers :o

For the equipment side of things, your own set of ladders is always useful (just make sure you clearly mark them as NETWORK or they go walkies... Everyone knows IT also need DVD Duplicators, can be really useful, similarly if you make DVDs you need to be able to print on them too! On a serious note, if you have the money, have you colour coded your cabinets yet And by that I mean a different colour for each room? Can save hours and hours of needless stress when something goes down later on! Similarly the Dymo label printers are really useful and so are batteries.
