cpjitservices Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Hi all, I am down to 2 GB on my DC, I've cleaned it up as much as possible. Unfortunately this DC was originally built on minimal specs then converted over to VMWare and we did away with the physical box. Here's my problem: Drive C is almost full, After Drive C I have Drive F which is were all profiles etc are stored. I've added / extended the space in VMWare but obviously I need to resize the actual drive C, I've added free Space as 'D' but it's after F. Hence - Drive C wont expand. Is there a way around this ? is there a quick n dirty way to fix this so I can extend the Drive C into D ? Or anyway I can move D so that it comes after C ? Thanks all - hope this makes sense!!

cpjitservices Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 I've created a partition on my free space and changed the drive letter to 'D' but it's still after drive 'F' in Disk Manager, Drive C still won't expand to this volume. Any Ideas anyone ? Thanks - - - Updated - - - Remove the D partition and then expand C to take up the additional space on the disk. Tried removing D - I didnt get the Expand option.

I've no idea, they've always been Basic, I've extended other volumes on Basic before. Whats the difference ?

Use Robocopy with the correct switch and you can preserve permissions. 1

cpjitservices Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 From reading on the internet.. Dynamic Disks are being typically used for anything larger than 2TB in size, mines a lot less. I reckon with permissions etc I Might be able to cheat in that I could use GParted to clone my F - into the Free space, delete F partition, resize Drive C and then Move the new partition on free space to 'F'. Surely there's a way to do this without taking the DC offline though ???

You need to delete the green logical/extended partition so that the space shows up as unallocated like on the other drive (at least to start with). In GParted you could move the F partition to the end of the drive and then expand the C drive, although obviously this requires rebooting the server and has an element of risk. Domino Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 What I'd recommend. 1.Create a new partition at the end of the free space of 60gb and assign it g:\ 2. robocopy entire contents of f:\ to g:\ 3. remove any shares from f:\ folders and recreate them on g:\ 4: check everything is working as expected. 5. delete the f:\ parition, reassign g:\ as F:\ 6: extend c:\ into the space where f:\ was when you recreate the shares will be your only "downtime" in this method - using gparted will require the server be booted into it. 1

You may have to bite the bullet introduce a new DC, transfer any FSMO roles making sure it is a Global Catalog and then demoting the old one, leaving it as a file server for now. To be honest I'd rather build a fresh server in the virtual environment where possible rather than P2V'ing Much better to build a fresh OS in the virtual environment and transfer the services.

I'd agree, but right now I neither have the space or resources... I'm trying to sort this little job out then I'm on to a new job!! I have Robocopy, from Resource toolkit with GUI, which options do I need to set as when I click 'Run' I get done... but actually nothing has copied across ?
