Can't remember what it was called now, think it was on Channel 4... some guys tried to rob diesel from a tanker for their car and manage to blow everything up. Anyone remember ? No electricity is an easy one in the short term. Check the circuit breakers to put power back on. They've not been tripped. Odd. Check your mobile phone and realise you have no signal or mobile internet connection, realise something's wrong. Panic. Calm down and check again. Still nothing. Turn it off. It's useless to you right now. Intend to check back later. Consult neighbours. Find they have same issues. Assume localised power cut. Eat your perishable foods first, fruits and the like. The power might come back on. Might not. Don't open your fridge or freezer until you have to. 24 hours pass. Still no power. Turn on phone. Still nothing. Attempt to drive/walk elsewhere to see if anywhere else has power. Find nothing. [GET MUGGED. GAME OVER]. Return home. Fill bathtub with water. The water supply is likely still clean, but I can't promise it will stay that way. Unfortunately we'd be on limited supplies of water, so bathing wouldn't really be top priority at the time. Run out of perishable food. Consider heading to $localSupermarket. They won't have power either. Go anyway and hope. Join in with the looting, because you need food. Take cans of food, bottles of water and salt (thanks @edutech4schools for pointing out salt). Ignore non-necessities such as alcohol/tobacco. Consider washing powder, but only if you have the space for it. Consider pharmacies for basic painkillers and other medicines. Check mobile phone again. Still no signal or internet. Turn off again. Consider self-defence mechanisms. People who have less stuff will probably want your stuff. People who have more stuff will probably want your stuff, too. Start collecting any refuse water you can (water used for washing dishes and the like) and use it to water plants to grow a few perishable foods (tomatoes, cucumbers, something like that). Hydroponics would be amazing if you could find a way to keep your fish alive (what do fish even eat, besides fish flakes?) Consider making contact with (geographically) close friends and family. Holing up together could be beneficial. After that, I'm not too sure. Eventually your tins of food and bottles of water would run out and the supermarket would be empty by then. You'd need to find a farm or similar but in all likelihood by then everything would have been stolen or the farmer has a shotgun and won't let you get close. Not sure what I would do after that. My plan would only really get you a week or so.

Discovery had a thing on a while back that had "what if" scenarios, such as nanobots absorbing all electric, or a solar EMP destroying all circuitry in the world, or smallpox coming back etc. Some were quite shocking. The "professionals" worked out that it would take less than 72 hours before full scale riots and killings were taking place for resources, as people would start dropping because of lack of water, then people would go in raiding groups for food and resources such as fuel ready to use etc. I think the figures they used were as follows. 0-1 Month: 10% of population dead 1-6 Months: 25% of population dead 6-12 Months: 40% of population dead 1-5 Years: 65% of population dead 5-10 Years: 75% of population dead By this point, society would be self sustaining again growing what was needed to survive, farming animals, foraging for food and hunting again. We'd back to 1700-1800's level of technology should electricity suddenly stop. The worst affected areas would be high density populations where there are more than 250 people per square KM. Of the high % of deaths the professionals said you would be looking at people over 50 and under 10 due to the inherent weaknesses of their immune system (around 70% of all deaths would fall in this category).

On the plus point, we'd come back from the brink of overpopulation. (Don't we need to something like half the current population to become 'sustainable' again?)

I live near to vast swathes of countryside and fresh water I know where the is a big castle with big solid doors and enough space inside for livestock and crops. I also have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. Or just head for Terminus. Watch Threads, it shows Sheffield getting nuked. But yeah...nukes will land on these targets first: - Infrastructure (Water/Power/Telecommunications) - Chemical Production - Metal Production / Refinement - Defence Systems / Bases This will cripple the economy. They may even hit food production. Once the country is thrown into disarray another round will hit major population hubs such as city centres if they haven't already. You live anywhere near these sites you won't have survived. But what if you survive the explosions, collapsed buildings and fires being handled by a crippled fire service and army? We take into account that the air raid sirens have been removed, these include not only initial warnings for "Air Raid/All Clear" but the pulses issued for approaching fallout. People are also too stupid to know that isn't snow falling outside their house but radioactive debris and likely go trudging through it or playing in it. The fallout will then be brought back inside, one speck on your exposed skin will kill. Nobody will have a stock of non-perishable food and water, a safe room or even know to tie up dead bodies in cling film tightly and move them to another room. Neither would they know to remain indoors until all clear is sounded (which it won't be, no sirens) or wait at least 24-48 hours before even thinking of going outside. If your house is even standing. And after that? The ground invasion may have started, conventional bombing and all out war on ruined streets making Chernobyl look like Butlins on a good day. Have fun surviving that.
