So how localised is this lack of electricity problem then? Are we talking something that manages to take out all power world wide? What can even do that without wiping out all life in the process? Once in 500,000,000,000 years solar flair? Then, if that's the case, how would I know? So, even if it's not, I'd assume it's localised. Which means, I think, my actions would be....

 

Turn up at work, no power, school shut, go home.

Next day - try work again.

Think somethings a bit fishy, drive to family in a town 30 miles away.

Realise they have the same problem - drive to London.

 

Mmm, not Internet in the UK then?

 

Channel Tunnel and off to the continent. Become a hobo wandering around Eurasia until I stumble upon electricity and Internet. North Korea?

Supposedly, nuclear explosions in the upper atmosphere could do it. The radiation would fall down but would dissipate relatively quickly as it would spread over a large area, rather than the concentrated dose of a ground level detonation (IIRC from some show or other).

OK, lets take for example - electricity is done, your freezer foods are the first ones to go and would require eating quickest, followed by fridge food, then larder and tinned foods.

 

Salt is cheap enough, but factor in NOWHERE is more than 72 miles from the coast in the UK (Tamworth being furthest away) that is at best a 2 day hike from Tamworth, at worst a week to get to the sea. Nowhere is further than 40 miles from tidal waters (rivers). So getting to a salt giving water body is reasonably easy. Extracting salt from seawater (and making drinkable water) is simple enough, without the use of an osmosis pump or anything. You can sustain yourself quite easily with seawater.

 

Factor in coastal lands have high proteins - limpets, clams, razer clams, fish, shrimp etc you could survive quite well at the coast :)

A solar EMP could easily do it, never mind a nuke.

 

Nasa have seen solar flares hit mars, with the ferocity that would destroy all electronics on earth (only once, back in the 70s I think). Now granted, this was 40 years ago or so, and chances of it happening are slim, but it could well happen.

Oh no you wont, not unless you have a pre 1920s car....

 

My tech is set with vehicles. He drives a Piaggio APE, has a Lada Niva, access to a Fiat 126 (built in Poland!), and probably others... So it doesn't have to be 1920s. Just, err, low-tech.

Lada Niva has electronic ignition though, plus they all have batteries which power various necessities. You would need a non battery vehicle.

Nah, a lead acid battery would be fine. And an old Niva doesn't have electronic ignition...

vehicles built in the 1800s-1920s used a crank to get things going, beyond that they used batteries of sorts. Remember, you CAN start diesel engines without a battery, its just a hassle.

It has to be the older flywheel type engines not the newer injection ones.

Its nigh on impossible on modern direct injections.

A few key things I'd look for, longer term:

 

Wood - fuel for fire, also to turn into charcoal for water filtering.

Salt - Preservative for meats, necessary to survive also

Fire starting equipment - flint and steel ideal

Food - its everywhere really, but we're very fussy when its in abundance.

 

To be honest, individually you've not got a huge chance of survival if society collapses. What's more likely is small groups form which can survive much easier.

 

And turn the above into a camping & Fishing trip , trout / Salmon and or sea fishing, can use the wood / fire starting equipment etc to make a bbq ( with other food sources ) and for heat as well. Although would possibly want to do this in warmer climates ie abroad.

i would carry on blacksmithing and start hunting with my non machinary weapons that i have in the house Bow, cross bow, snairs(for the ass rats), and my dogs.

 

oh an if i got desprate enoth i would make a flying machine from human power i would call it the flying bush and it would look like a pig :p

Nah, they'd knock functioning things out but wouldn't tough stuff that's turned off. It's not your typical EMP as such. And I like to think we'd have plenty of warning about that. Point is, a global knockout is such an unlikely event. Nuclear detonations will eventually ionise the atmosphere at their detonation point effectively creating an insulator againt further blasts, the solar storm, is A)unlikely and B) not the same kind of pule. We'd just siwtch off for a bit.

I'm a blacksmith, I'm pretty reasonable with some bushcrafting.

Can do animal slaughter and butchery

Don't have guns but do have functional swords

In good shape and could walk/run for reasonable distance as and when needed

 

These scenarios have occurred to me before, and I have made sure I have some useful equipment around
