Storer Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Okay so I have a client that is seeking for a suitable way to backup 20TB of data, does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe using an external hard drive. Recommendations would be extremely helpful.
mrbios Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Depends what kind of data it is, how long it needs to be backed up, how many restore points they need. Probably a few more factors further to that too. Easiest method without any other info to go on would be an LTO6 autoloader, an 8 tape LTO6 autoloader would do 20TB uncompressed, then it also depends on how much the data is expected to grow, how compressible that data is, might even need to be the next size up which i think is a 24 tape autoloader. Does it even need to be on tape for long term backup or is it fine sitting on disk? If D2D is fine instead then maybe a big NAS or external storage would suffice, but that all depends where the data is, how it's going to be trnasferred etc. It's all very variable and depends on lots of factors.

Michael Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Because of the volume of data involved, I'd ask whether some of it can/could be archived to reduce the backup sizes. The alternative to tape would a RAID5 or RAID6 array (for example) using 6/7 x 4TB SATA drives or more, giving 20TB. In theory RAID5 or RAID6 can have any number of hard disks (subject to the controller supporting them). I'd also probably advise 1 full backup per week and then a differential backup (if this is required regularly). It really wouldn't make sense to backup that sort of volume daily.

They start out at 30 slots (LTO6) and can go up to 300 slots as they are modular. Don't let the fact it is Oracle scare you off. I just priced one recently and it was only about 3k more than a single tape drive from HP. zag Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Whack 8 4tb disks in a server and back it up. Personally I would dedupe the thing and "manage" the data first though.
