unixman_again Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 We have a person who does marketing for us, and he has been writing an email to go off to a bunch of prospects, and in the email is a link to a "secret" area on our website. It's full of public info, like images, brochures, etc but you have to be in the know to get to it. Anyway, he said when he copied the link from my email to him (which worked) into another email, it lost functionality. I thought perhaps it was coping in all of the OWA crap that it includes in a url, so I suggested he open the link and copy it from the address bar of the browser. Nup, still didn't work. Anyway he comes in and we get onto his W8 laptop so he can show me the problem. He fires off internet explorer, goes to our OWA and opens a draft email. It's all plain text. So I says, he needs to select the html format button on the top of the email composing screen, except that it isn't there. Now I knew that I wasn't going do-lally, there should be an html button, so I fire off IE on my desktop, goes to OWA and it's all different. I have many more formatting options that he is seeing. I wondered if it that old chestnut we get, where things don't work in IE but they do in Chrome, Firefox, etc. On his laptop, I fire up Chrome, go to OWA and have him login. Bingo! It all works fine; he has all the missing options, so he can format his emails in html. This is the first time, I've seen an M$ site not work in an M$ browser. He said he was quite happy using Chrome. I keep telling people to use Chrome. It works much better. Go to our moodle and you can drag and drop files onto it, but not in IE. Go to our staff portal (Joomla) and the lightbox plugins display completely, but not in IE. (This is quite fun; the X to close the popup isn't displayed in IE, but if you hover over the place where it should be, and click the popup closes correctly.) The library catalog system works in Chrome but not in IE. (Really good this - type something into the seach box and IE sits there looking stupid when you click "Search".) The only reason they have to use IE is to mark registers; our MIS uses ClickOnce and without an extension, it doesn't work in Chrome. Although apparently it will on a Chromebook; shame we don't have any. The staff will keep using IE and I will keep pointing out to them it is carp and things will work better in Chrome. Rant over and breathe.....
LosOjos Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 IE has been the bane of many a web dev's life for years. How MS can continue to push that carp out is beyond me, it's shameful.
TronXP Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Do you use exchange? If so there is a problem with IE11 if you are using Exchange 2010 SP2 and lower I think. We had a similar problem, updated Exchange to latest SP and updates and its all working fine now.

Just about every website you have ever used will have to have employed some sort of workaround to make it display properly in IE; it's just an awful browser.
localzuk Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 You just have to look at the changes between IE6 and IE11, to see how much work people have had to do to keep websites working properly in that FSM-forsaken browser. Like with Frog - works fine in IE 9. You have to have it in compatibility mode in IE 10, and NOT in compatibility mode in IE 11! So, if you have a mixed environment, you can end up with a right mess. We standardise on saying "use Chrome" now. Although, it has issues with Frog! Lol

It's okay, for the last 2 years or so I've ben telling people DONT use Chrome, it has problems with SharePoint, SLG, when users installed Chrome it would cause problems for their shortcuts and VLEs like Frog don't like Chrome. Sorry but this whole things work better in Chrome is only based on personal experience. My last job we forced IE and made sure no one installed anything else = no problems.

Sharepoint is your problem there, however I'm not sure what problems you've had with SLG - works fine in Chrome here. Ie usually works with most things. Compatability mode is your friend. The point is, every website of any decent level of complexity will almost certainly have a load of workarounds hard coded in to it so that it will work in IE. The fact that IE even include 'Compatibility Mode' speaks volumes; why not just make a browser that follows standards like everyone else? IE stinks! The sooner it can be permanently ditched, the better IMO!
localzuk Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 With web development now, you have to basically develop everything twice - once for standards compliant browsers and once for IE (or even more times for IE, depending on whether you want to support older versions or not!). The amount of extra work it creates is pretty phenomenal. Not to mention the number of sites who have developers who have focussed only on IE - leaving everyone else to struggle. Great when you have a world filled with mobile devices that don't run IE.

No issues here with Chrome using sharepoint online and SSO, some issues with calendars in older versions of IE. The only thing I've had issues with in chrome is cisco old GUI's for CUCM and Wirelses controllers but they are all terrible regardless what browser you use. Then theirs other benefits to chrome like its great cloud syncing, much improved settings and history pages over IE, more stable then IE, when it does lockup or crash it will 99% of the time recover my previous browsing session, cross device support I find useful viewing what I was browsing on my phone or tablet, flash running sandboxed, multiple user support and its sometimes over eagerness to warn you about unrecognized certificates. I've also had it warn me about a site that appears to be dodgy. Even just creating some basic display pages can prove a nightmare for IE recently making some content for our intranet worked in mozilla, worked in chrome, worked in SOME versions of IE and the order they worked were just odd, fine it 11 fine in 9 didnt work with 10, only had a couple of divs and I always use a full css reset first! Chromes inspect element and dev tools are also great, use them more then firebug now Edited February 28, 2014 by bondbill2k2

This might be because it's integrated into the Windows OS and I can easily set settings on there for example going to Tools - Internet Options is the same as going to Control Panel - Internet Options. I don't understand why and how Microsoft got it so bad surely they should be the best at this kind of thing! We have a GP that deploys Google Chrome MSI to all machines, this seems to work pretty well! Microsoft need to sort themselves out really, though it is funny I found the IE app in metro screen always seemed to work a lot better.
