Hi,

 

I've come here as a previous user of http://www.ictforums.co.uk

 

Does anyone know what happened to the site? I went to visit it and found it for sale.

 

I had a lot of good conversations on there and would like to get hold of some of the information shared.

 

The site's currently going for £16 on ebay, so maybe I should place a bid!

Jonathon has joined EduGeek.net as a member as he does not have the time or cash to do justice to ICTForums.co.uk. The membership over there are a good bunch and a number are also members on here too ...

 

If anyone does purchase the site then the best of luck to them and they know where to find us.

 

As a former member I would like to thank Jonathon for the time he did spend on it, especially moderating threads with me in where some members decided that being Manglement is a *bad* thing ... I'm not too sure that they were wrong either sometimes.

You summary is pretty much correct. A forum needs a lot of members and regular posts to keep it going, but people don't sign up and use a forum that isn't busy and dynamic. Therefore... catch 22!

 

Unforunately I was unable to overcome this problem, and even if I had, I wasn't in a position to host a busy site, and didn't have the programming skills to maintain and develop it into something bigger.

 

Will be interesting to see if someone else can make a go of it, as I have recently handed it over to a new owner.

 

For me personally, I will continue to be a member and regular user of Edugeek. The ability to post a question, then see the number of views and replies increase by the minute is something we never achieved with ICTForums.

 

I might visit the latter occasionally, just out of interest, in the same way that you might drive past your old house occasionally to see what the new occupants have done to the decor!

 

It would be gutting in a way if it grew to be a highly successful and well known commercial site, but I'm fairly comfortable with the fact that I did everything I could to get it off the ground, so good luck to the new owner!

You asked for everything you got Tony :D :D :D Best thread we ever had. Didn't the Fire Brigade have to come and put out your pants. :D IIRC it did quieten down and we had a calm and civilised discussion (or did I get drunk) Anyway, you offered me invaluable advice on that forum and I will always be grateful. Won't stop me taking the p*ss though. :D

 

I wonder about the need for another ICT Technicians Forum when we have edugeek.net.

I came round to that way of thinking myself eventually, hence giving up!

 

I'd actually go a step further than that and say it's better just to have just one forum. More people in the same place, means more answers and a quicker response to questions posted.

Yeah, but then you always get some power hungry loon who starts trolling and making life hell for the admins and you end up with a community split.

 

... and no I am not tendering for that job! Just experience :Cry:

There will always be other places to look and lurk. This place is a wonderful community, there are the JISC Mailing lists, certforums.co.uk (who seem to have as much trouble with meet ups as we do!), experts exchange ... and this is before we get to usenet or google / yahoo groups.

 

Thankfully we have a bot on here who is hardwired into pretty much everywhere ... I hesitate to think what Geoff's uptime is.

Yes ... I want to complain ... apparently I could not put a bid in without signing up to all sorts of things.

 

That is not fair and I intend to take them to court over it all ... or perhaps I will just sit down with a can of coke and bash my head against a brick wall over Sharepoint for another few hours.

 

The site is back up an running under new management so all discussions are available again (and most are worth reading ... especially the arguement where one idiot called some technicians 'minions'!)

Why would or do you need to bash your head against a brickwall with Sharepoint? Its a really nice product, I love it.

The bashing is more to do with working out what works for secondary schools and trying to generate some tips on good practice whilst leaving it open enough for schools to play with without being *too* blank.

well i love mine, ive made it all myself and its great and the staff love it as its just like working word or outlook! So goes down well and the kids love it! just wish they would stop searching for Goggle within the site instead of Google :D
