SWGfL New Transparent Proxy
AnnDroyd replied to FragglePete's topic in South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL)
This represents a huge step forward for schools wishing to provide proper "Guest WiFi" services. We've been providing this for about a year with various methods for dealing with the proxy configuration. None have proved reliable so we've ended up with posters around the school telling people the proxy details they need to manually add to their device. Losing this hindrance altogether promises to make the Guest Wifi facility come alive and be really useful. -
We have a couple of these screens. Some of the above problems sound familiar, and overall we found the software complicated and unreliable. Both of ours now run a standard installation of Windows 7 on our domain. A script runs on startup to display either a Powerpoint presentation or a web page as required. Much easier to manage and more reliable too.

I'm not sure if this relates to Windows 7, or Windows 2008. It could be the workstation, or server responsible. I've noticed that if you open the Add Printer wizard and search for network printers, the printers appear in what appears to be an abitary order. You can sort alphabetically by clicking on the column header, but next time, they're out of sequence again. Does anyone know how this order is defined, and if anything can be done to make them automatically appear alphabetically?

Restoring Exchange 2010 using Backup Exec 2010
AnnDroyd replied to AnnDroyd's topic in Enterprise Software
The backup and restore jobs are running with the domain administrator account, so that should be ok, shouldn't it? -
I'm not sure if this is the right forum category for this, but it seemed like the closest match.... We're currently planning either a refurbishment or relocation of our IT Support office. Is anyone able to share some photos of their working areas so we can use them for ideas? Thanks

We're backing up our Exchange databases with Backup Exec. The backup completes fine, but we are unable to restore anything. Fortunately, I don't need to at the moment, but we could in future. Errors include: V-79-57344-898 - Backup Exec attempted to restore an Exchange database according to the job settings. The Exchange server was not found V-79-57344-905 - The resource credentials for the restore job were unable to create a role assignment for ApplicationImpersonation. V-79-57344-766 - Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials. Review the resource credentials for the job, and then run the job again. Has anyone experienced this kind of problem and found a solution? We're potentially going to have to replace our backup software to get around this.

Just checked that and tried again this morning and the scripts still don't run unless you log on as a user who has at least local admin rights. Putting the scripts in the user profile under startmenu>programs>startup works fine though, but the script runs visable once the user logs on.

We have foudn that since upgrading to IE9 and Office 2010, if you click on a link to download a document from a site requiring authentication (such as our own VLE), the login box appears behind the browser window. People obviously don't know about this so wait indifinitely for the document to open. Has anyone else experienced this?

This didn't seem to work for us but thanks for the suggestion. Fortunately we've just about got everything configured through policies and profiles now, so its not too much of a problem.

Unable to deply Visual Basic 2010 Express

Thanks both for that suggestion. I will try that method and see how we get on. -
Using TMG Server as a Transparent Proxy
AnnDroyd replied to AnnDroyd's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
James, thanks for your help with this one. We're now running TMG server with ISA script as a transparent proxy. Everything seems fine, including access to HTTPS sites. -
I think we found the cause of this problem by enabling verbose mode. The delay seemed to be when mapping drives and turned out to be caused by an unresponsive server. Fixing the problem with that server has greatly speeded up the logging in process.

We've tried to deploy Visual Basic 2010 Express by installing on one PC, then creating a Ghost AI package and running it on all the others (fairly standard procedure for most applications). However, whilst it runs fine on the original PC, on the others we get an error message saying "Invalid License Data. Reinstall is Required". Has anyone else seen this and found a way around it?

We are experiencing very slow logons with Windows 7 when using roaming profiles. APproximatley 30 seconds to 1 minute is typical. When logging on with an account that uses a local profile, the login is almost instant. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution for it?

Yes, I have allowed them access to run scripts and edit the registry. This must be ok as the script works if run manually after logon. Good point regarding the event logs though. I'll have a look at that tomorrow. Thanks
