gtg93 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Just wondering if anyone knows of a Windows Command Prompt emulator, whether it be online or a downloadable exe. The IT staff here are wanting to show the students basic commands such as ping and ipconfig whilst they're covering a networking module, but I'm very hesitant to give them any sort of access to an actual command prompt for obvious reasons. I've done a quick Google search but only managed to find linux ones.

abillybob Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Maybe a bit extreme and take a bit of work but maybe they would be better with a virtual desktop through virtual box running a standard windows os as WORKGROUP and then they are free to do what they want but can effect the network in any way??? 1

Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not speaking from experience with either of the two, but they don't support ping commands and the like do they? Maybe a bit extreme and take a bit of work but maybe they would be better with a virtual desktop through virtual box running a standard windows os as WORKGROUP and then they are free to do what they want but can effect the network in any way??? I was hoping to avoid this to be honest, but it could come in use for demo-ing various other things too I guess. Will speak with the teachers and see if it'd be handy for them.

This was my first thought too with the added bonus of an 'advanced' type of class where the pupils can build a virtual network. We have a training exercise here that involves setting up a bunch of Smoothies in various different networking configurations with VPNs and Hardware Failover and it always goes down well and gets great feedback. 1

Thanks I'll have a look at that - but as you say, I'd assume it utilises the OS's ping command... i know when i was at college any of this was done on workgroup machines that were old (these were also used for machine brakedowns) we also lernt how to netwrok them together and such. We have a similar setup of 5 computers on a seperate workgroup network, with various switches and wireless routers for the students to configure, but I was looking at something more for the teacher to demo on their smartboard. If they break anything, it just gets re-formatted / wiped to factory settings. A linux live disc would be a no no then lol What harm could possibly be done? Linux live discs for all! I'm shocked there isn't a dummy command prompt simulator available, with all the functionality but doesn't acutally run the commands.

gtg93 Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll probably go for the virual PC option, this allows them to have full admin rights so they can show networking options etc in the control panel too, which will no doubt be helpful for the networking module. I assume there'll be other things that would be handy for them to be able to show too... If they break it, I can just copy the virtual machine back across.
