HarryMonkey Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 I managed to drag my ageing carcass round 6k on Saturday in 42:10 (the 5k was done in 35:10) 2
kennysarmy Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I got a new PB on Saturday in our local Park Run....previous best was 27.10 in perfect conditions in the summer. On Saturday it was cold and muddy but I decided I'd "go for it"....and went through the pain barrier on the last lap to record a 26:17 time....well chuffed. 3

kennysarmy Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Nice one My first run was back in June : 35:24 ! I'd love to break the 25 minute barrier in 2017!
HarryMonkey Posted December 19, 2016 Author Posted December 19, 2016 On that showing there's no reason why your shouldn't. I would like to get back to doing a sub 30 minute 5k so that's my goal for next year as well as looking to extend to 10k.

I would like to get back to doing a sub 30 minute 5k so that's my goal for next year as well as looking to extend to 10k. I'm not sure my knees could cope with the step up to longer runs...5k is a good sweet spot for me and I do like a good strong sprint finish. The running has helped enormously with my fitness for vets football too... that's a big improvement! I was hoping to break the 24 minute barrier in 2016. Not to be sadly so will carry over into 2017 Good luck... 1
HarryMonkey Posted December 20, 2016 Author Posted December 20, 2016 Good luck to everyone with their running in 2017. I'm sure we can all strive to achieve our goals whatever they might be. I'm planning on doing my first parkrun for some time along with my partner who will be doing her very first one on Christmas Eve. 3

Best I could do was to get my mrs to agree to coming along with a camera and take photos as ours if fancy dress - I'll be running as cowboy!
Iain.Faulkner Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Half Marathon training again last night, got out early doors for a fairly quick 5.7km, pushed myself pretty hard and had a couple of KM's under 5:30 which was good to see, been a while since I last saw that :-) 1
HarryMonkey Posted December 21, 2016 Author Posted December 21, 2016 Looks like there are quite a few Parkruns taking place on Christmas day if anyone's interested. Christmas Compendium | parkrun UK 1
jdoyle Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Looks like there are quite a few Parkruns taking place on Christmas day if anyone's interested. Christmas Compendium | parkrun UK there's an unofficial one in Lydiard Park, Swindon on Christmas Day. Trying to persuade a few of the bods I run with that this might be "fun". It's not been well received :-) but reckon I'll head over to it.
unixman_again Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 The gym I go to is open Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and News Years Day. I'll be there. The previous gyms I used seemed to close around 23rd Dec and not reopen until 2nd Jan. Going back after nearly two weeks off was tough. I find my fitness disappears really quickly if I don't exercise.
MYK-IT Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Busy week ahead for parkrun with events taking place Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day! With New Year's Day being the one, and only day of the year whereby you are allowed to do 2 parkruns in one day.... Run/volunteer at one, then volunteer/run at another local one.. or a mixture. Check out parkrun's website to see which (local) parkrun is joining up with another. (One will be 9am, other 10:30am etc). Even if you don't (want to) run, these events only, and can happen with enough volunteers. So take the whole family down, plenty of roles to do... Marshalling, time keeping, funnel managers, tail runner, photographer, token issuer, bar code scanners... Runner to walker's, are all welcome. Can even take your dog, kids or even push them around in their buggy (the kids, not the dog!). This weekend will be festive themed, with Xmas outfits and festive food afterwards... It's a great way to spend an hour or so...Despite the strong winds forecasted! And it's a nice way to socialise with the local community. 4
kennysarmy Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I'm running Christmas Eve - fancy dress - going as a cowboy! I normally volunteer about every 5th or 6th run 1
jdoyle Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 well, Rough n Tumble done. 10miles around the Wiltshire countryside through gloop and up/down hills. Standard road based half marathons are much easier I think. 2
Iain.Faulkner Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Happy New Year fellow runners :-) Managed to get a decent amount of runing in the week between christmas and New Years day (total of 34km over 3 runs of 2 x 10km and 1 x 14km) but then came down with what has turned into a lingering cold :-( so only managed 5km last week as I feel totally drained :-( Hoping to get out and back onto the plan tomorrow night though 1
smidsy Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Happy New Year all. Managed very little run in the run up to Christmas. Did a couple of off road races between christmas and new year but pretty much resembled a giant blob running (walking) up and down hills. Back on the training plan as of last Saturday. Must lose weight.... Good luck all with any plans for races / adventures this year. 1
AJWhite1970 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) I've setup a lunchtime running club with a few of the support staff. Three times a week we do a 4.5k lap of town not going above 8m/km pace by doing 60s running/60s walking the whole way round. There are a couple who have never run before and are finding that pace comfortable enough without needing Oxygen and a defib whereas those of us who are a bit fitter are enjoying the gentle jog and the fresh air outside of school Edited January 10, 2017 by AJWhite1970 Added route to post 3
Iain.Faulkner Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Got out last night as planned...just the 5km on the plan last night. Thought I'd pushed the pace but found it still to be about the same as it was in previous runs. Still glad to get out :-)
eyetea Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Haven't managed more than 3km in a go this year! Will get there again... 1
unixman_again Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Thirty years ago, I wrecked my lower back lifting a 5kg modem out of a box. It eventually got better and generally doesn't cause me problems, but every so often it comes back to remind me it's still there. It is always something innocuous that sets it off - I'll deadlift 100kgs in the gym without problem, but it has gone putting on my shoes, putting on my jumper and picking up a pillow off the floor. The only time that I've injured my back in the gym, is moving a 5kg plate off a Smith machine bar, onto the plate storage pegs. When it happens, it lasts a couple of days and then all is well. It went again on 21st Dec - I wasn't doing anything, just standing in the kitchen waiting for the kettle to boil. There are still twinges but it is getting better thanks to exercise. When it first went, I was told to do the following : cat stretches lie on my back with the knees up and let them fall to the side, left and right lie on stomach and lift the legs off the ground, either individually, or together pelvic tilts – stand and basically gently hump your imaginary friend superman - on all fours, stretch alternate legs and arms together, eg left leg and right arm These are great because you don't need any equipment and I can do them while watching TV. My friend the phsyio, suggested another, which is damn impossible. On the dipping bars, prop yourself up on straight arms. Now try and lift your bum as high as possible. Basically you are trying to hinge from the waist but in reverse. I can get a small amount of movement but not a great deal. The good news is that I can feel that I've worked muscles in the lower back that haven't been worked correctly for ages (if ever). It really does seem to be working. The shouty Jeff Cavaliere does the exercise in this video 3:50 to 4:20 - I can't get anywhere near the range of motion that he does - maybe it will come over time.
Iain.Faulkner Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Managed a couple more training runs since my last post. 8km on Friday night at a faster pace (5.56 per km) and then again last night for my longer run (as Sunday became a bit of a washout!) for 13km at a pace of 6.00 per km :-)
Iain.Faulkner Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Out again last night (to get myself back on track with my half marathon training plan) just 5km with a pace of 5.58 per km 1
