It is a common misconception though. The New Testament was written in Koine Greek where the name of Christ is written as Χριστος. It was traditional to write the name of Christ as X. This carried on with with the traditional way of writing the day Christ was born on as Xmas. The movement against writing Xmas is actually quite a recent thing.
