kennysarmy Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Our music PC's are all starting to get stuck at "Please wait" IF they are shut down illegally... I've removed one of them to an OU which has no computer policies appled and it still sits at "Please wait" - to rule out a policy being applied causing it. Anyone any ideas as to what might be causing it and how to fix it urgenly - PC's are needed for an exam on Friday and I'm running out of time to fix this one and understand why it's just affecting the PC's in this department.

The only time I've had this it is when I have rebuilt a few pc's and Sophos does something to stuff up the network driver so it perpetually waits at Please Wait. The solution was to run netsh reset winsock within safemode and everything else carried on as normal after that.

Interestingly if we startup with the network lead OUT they boot fine, but with the network lead IN they can take up to 15-20 mins to get to CTRL+ALT+DEL screen after an illegal shutdown. We are going to update the drivers and BIOS and test again... I accept that the PC's should perhaps take longer to boot if they just have the power lead pulled but 15-20 mins seems a long time to me..... They were initially stuck in a loop as our power management software was shutting down the PC's after 10mins thinking that no one was logged on.....

kennysarmy Posted November 19, 2013 Author Posted November 19, 2013 Sounds to me like it's stuck applying a GPO. But we moved the PC out to an OU with no applied computer policies and with inheritence turned off and it still took ages to boot.... But I agree - it does look like that to me too....

protocol Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Please wait is replaced with "Applying Computer Settings"..... It wasn't a fix, it's just a way of narrowing down what part of the logon process it's getting stuck at. The fact you've moved it to a different OU can rule it out being a GPO.

Yes, pre login - the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen does eventually appear but is taking over 15 minutes to appear. I can test removing one of the PC's from the domain and then doing an illegal shutdown to see if the delay remains. Cheers

OK, on the PC we had moved to an empty OU we booted it in to safe mode and disabled any services (MSCONFIG) that were started on a standard PC in our office. Rebooted. The PC started normally and removed some software that now was nt applicable - all good We then went back in to safe mode - MSCONFIG and reset everything back to normal and it still booted fine. I am now going to move it back to the correct OU - log in as a student and shutdown illegally and see if I can make the problem return....

The offending Service is.... DHCP Now what? Can DHCP local service be repaired?
