Hi hoping someone can give me some advice. We are about to merge 2 schools and put the database on a single server, the schools will eventually be joined with a 10Meg link. I was wondering what the best solution would be i.e. server in 1 school and the other school connecting to it or the server at the council building and both schools connecting to it ? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

From a SIMS point of view, I don't see it matters other than the line speed between each option.

10Mbit link? I'd be worried it will be very very easy to saturate for any application expecting to have a 100Mbit/s share of a 1000Gbit/sec server.

 

At the very least you'd need to not have any file shares or updates pulling over the link, and each site would need its own dedicated internet feed.

If you're going to be installing the SIMS client on machines at the schools, I'd worry about a 10Mbit connection. Especially with deployment of updates. They'd need to be local to the school.

 

You'd be better having it as a RDP server in that circumstance.

10Mb sounds tight. We're looking at something similar, but with 100Mb. SQL can work well over slower links, and you can limit its bandwidth, but at that speed it may be painful. Some sort of replication between sites may be best, but there's a cost factor.

I'd say putting an RDG in and pushing it that way and staff at site 2 using that, also on the plus side gives you access from home to SIMS for no more fees or need for SLG.

Or Change your MIS. It would probably be the better value option.

We got this running 2 ways!

we use a VDI (citrix in a box)

have the database for 4 (yes 4 sites) accessible to any who has the rights to access them.

all sites use a 100mb connection (we have 200mb)

no speed issues on any sites

 

We also have a VPN direct from those sites in to ours, that also achieves the same result.
