Office 365 Email Migration

Hi Guys

 

We are currently looking at changing our email to Office 365.. I've trying to find a migration tool that will migrate our existing email to Office 365. We are currently using "Netmanager" NETBSD and I haven't found a tool as yet to be able to help us.

 

Would gratefully receive some help / advice on this matter

Should be pretty easy to do just using outlook.

 

We just moved all their email into a pst and attached it to the new mailbox. A very simple solution but it worked surprisingly well.

 

For students we just kept their old webmail boxes open for 6 months then shut it down.

The PST option is what we are doing also. Mainly because our current LEA provided email/ISP has said they won't be providing support for moving our emails across! And they won't allow higher level access to their Exchange servers so that we can use migration tools

If you're not running an Exchange server then the best you can hope for with the free tools is a simple IMAP migration, or a PST capture. There may be third party tools (I'm thinking Quest, Binary Tree, MigrationWiz, CloudMigrator365, etc.) that might be able to do more.

This might be a silly question, but does anyone know of any "Free" magration tools? $8.99 - $10.99 Per Mailbox is going to be quite expensive

We've just exported using the PST method. Paying hundreds for those tools just isn't viable. If you can migrate in batches it's relatively pain free.

 

How our people getting the PST's though is what I'd be interested in. Right now I am having to login as the users to do it. Is there any other way?

If you use exchange you can use exmerge.exe

 

We just did it manually though, only took a couple of days to go round all our staff as we had to setup the new email anyway.

Does your current mail solution allow you to connect in via IMAP?

If so, you can always test to see if that will copy your mail over for you from within the O365 portal.

How did you actually create each users account??

So far we've created "Test" accounts for our staff via a CSV upload. We are planning on using DirSync when we fully move over.

 

We then went through the migration steps to assign a IMAP endpoint, and created the CSV containing the e-mail address of the Office365 account, and username & password for the IMAP mail box.

It then happily connected to our local server and copied the files up to the cloud.

It did take us 4 days to get the firewall sorted so that the ports 143 and 993 were opened for the specific IP range we needed. In hindsight I'd have been quicker allowing all IP's in since we'll disable it again in a couple of months.

I've used fetchmail to pull mail from one IMAP/POP3 and put it into another. Consider the following fetchmailrc (which assumes your DNS MX has switched).

 

poll pop3.lea.ac.uk proto pop3 user "example" with password "XXX" smtpname "[email protected]" fetchall

 

The only draw back is all the mail will appear as new. You can schedule this with cron of course, and leave it running for however weeks/months you want the migration to last to pickup new mail.

How did you deal with getting users passwords to do it? Or did you just reset them?

We are having similar issues moving our Staff mail to Office365. We use Firstclass The Leader in Enterprise Information Management | OpenText as our current mail system and we have setup the IMAP sync and it does connect but it only appears to pull in the mail from the inbox and ignores all subfolders that have been created including the sent mail folder. The next step is to try the .pst method, but I am a little wary how long it will take to get 150 staff accounts sent up.

Errrr I've just completed ours using all the standard Microsoft tools, had exchange 2010, set up a hybrid deployment, set up an ADFS server and then migrated all the accounts using the exchange management console.

i have an email from who i suspect is your isp and they are offering to download the schools pst files to a usb/hdd for the low low price of approx £800.

 

I assume pst migration is 1 by one setting up user in outlook downloading years worth of cat pictures then adding new account to outlook and dragging mail from one to t'other? so not hard but a long tedious job?

Might I ask, has anyone ever managed to migrate out of NetManager since this forum was originally posted without having to extract PST files for every user?

 

Everytime I ask for help from Precedence, who unfortunately also host our domain I just get responces with links that promote their e-mail client, which of course would be no surprise. Basically they are no help what so ever, and from what I gather in this thread, they have designed their servers to make it impossible to use the standard IMAP migration tool in Office 365.

No 3rd party tools here, just went from exchange to o365 using their own MS sync tools. Completely free and it works ok

In a previous school I've used the IMAP migration before from Squirral Mail all via the Office 365 migration section. But for NetManager... fails every time.
